Terribly cheap Casio sound. Great for retro, lo-fi, digital sounds

This was my first keyboard. It wasn't expensive. It taught me a lot about keyboard playing, chords and reading sheet music, because it has a simple but effective display that shows all of the chords and notes you're playing. Very useful for beginners. The key bed is by far the worst I own. The sound is very bad. Thin, digital low quality samples. They've used very few samples, so a lot are just transposed up and down. This makes them sound particularly crazy if you go too high or low for the preset. The different samples they've used are just too different in tone so they don't transition smoothly. You can clearly hear this when you go up and down the keyboard. They even put a disclaimer in the manual that it was "impossible to get right". If you're looking for that cheap Casio sound this keyboard is the one for you. You can make your own sounds by using the build in samples and changing the parameters such as the envelopes.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

"Harp" sounds beautifully digital. "Drum Kit 1" is supposed to be an acoustic drum, but sounds good for a retro drumcomputer for acid house. Playing "Fretless Bass" too high creates an unique synth sound. The choirs are good for digital sounding pads. The saw wave is strange and thin but soothing. Terrible for leads, but with a slow attack you can make good pads with it.

In the official video clip for "The Fantastic Journey of the Underground Man" Rocco Bell can be seen playing a Casio CTK-651. 0:46 gives a good close-up of the instrument. Note, it's likely the CTK-651 was only used for filming the video, not during the studio recording of the song itself, as Rocco uses different instruments during live performances of the song.

If you want to go for that lo-fi Casio sound, but also load your own samples and look a bit more serious during live performances, the Casio RZ-1 is a better alternative.
