Description

The Dreadbox Ataxia is your ticket to a universe of sound possibilities within a compact 10HP modular synthesizer module. As part of the versatile Chromatic Modules series, this dual modulator offers an impressive range of creative tools tailored for both budding synth enthusiasts and seasoned modular aficionados. With three dynamic modes—function generator, LFO, and ADSR envelope—Ataxia delivers unmatched flexibility for crafting unique soundscapes.

This module is designed for maximum tweakability, featuring four intuitive sliders that allow you to manipulate ADSR, delay time, and waveform shape according to your selected mode. Each of the two modulators can be independently controlled, with their settings conveniently saved in grab mode. This ensures seamless transitions and uninterrupted creativity during live performances or studio sessions.

For added versatility, Ataxia features separate trigger inputs and voltage-controlled time, level, and velocity for each modulator. This enables you to sculpt your sound with pinpoint precision, whether you're aiming for subtle modulations or dramatic sonic shifts. Its super-wide time response ranges from 1ms to 20 seconds, accommodating a vast array of musical styles and applications.

Key Features:

  • 2 independently controllable modulators within a single 10HP unit
  • Switchable modes: function generator, LFO, and ADSR envelope
  • Time response range: 1ms to 20 seconds
  • Separate outputs for each modulator with level attenuator
  • Variable curve response: logarithmic to exponential
  • Voltage-controlled time, level, and velocity
  • Pro-performance at an entry-level price
  • Note: Requires a Eurorack case and power supply (sold separately)

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Dreadbox Ataxia.

Features and functionality

  • Owners highlight that both ADSRs share the same trigger, limiting simultaneous use, which isn't clearly explained in marketing materials.

    Source
  • Using an AR envelope with Ataxia can cause clicking unless the full envelope is played out or an exponential shape is used.

    Source
  • The Ataxia's envelope can drive the filter on Eudemonia, causing undesirable sounds; attenuating the envelope resolves this but may require very low levels.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some users find the module cramped, noting that knobs and sliders are too small and close together, impacting usability.

    Source

Comparisons

  • It's recommended to consider a used Mutable Peaks, which offers more options and might fit within a similar budget.

    Source
  • One user stopped using the Eudemonia VCA due to its limitations and switched to the Hexagram from Void Modular for better results.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Although priced attractively, some users question the Ataxia's long-term investment potential due to its limited functionality per hp.

    Source

Other

  • Confusion exists around why the Dreadbox Ataxia was discontinued, indicating potential demand or interest despite its limitations.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Starting the mixer pots at 12 o'clock may alleviate clicky envelope issues with the Ataxia.
