Description
The Make Noise Echophon is a testament to the fusion of vintage inspiration and modern innovation. Conceived in collaboration with Tom Erbe of Soundhack, this Eurorack module takes its cues from the legendary Tempophon, offering a distinctive pitch-shifting echo experience. At its core, the Echophon features large, intuitive Pitch and Echo controls, enabling you to shift sounds up or down two octaves while navigating delay times ranging from a crisp 7ms to a spacious 1.7 seconds.
Designed for adventurous sound explorers, the Echophon includes both digital and analog feedback paths, allowing for richly textured sonic landscapes. The unique Freeze button opens up a world of hold, stutter, and sampling possibilities, making it an indispensable tool for any modular setup. With 24-bit AD/DA conversion and a Vactrol-based mix circuit, the Echophon ensures your dry signals retain their analog warmth, while the processed sounds blend seamlessly into your mix.
This module not only boasts cutting-edge DSP modifications by Tom Erbe but also embodies the craftsmanship of Make Noise's Asheville, NC facility. Whether you're an experimental artist seeking new aural dimensions or a seasoned synthesist looking to enhance your sonic palette, the Make Noise Echophon promises endless creative potential in a compact 20HP format.

Features and functionality
-
Echophon integrates a unique SoundHack algorithm focusing on pitch and warping effects, distinctly different from the Mimeophon's operation.
Source -
Mimeophon provides a wide range of effects, including clocked delays, chorus/vibrato, pseudo reverbs, and even self-oscillation, making it highly versatile.
Source -
The module offers unique looping capabilities with direct access to the feedback loop, providing distinct destructive effects, though some users find these effects somewhat uniform over time.
Source -
The Z-DSP delay cards are described as unique but may not justify their cost if delays are the primary focus over the reverb capabilities.
Source
Comparisons
-
Echophon is a straightforward clockable mono delay with pitch shifting, while Mimeophon offers complex stereo delay, resonator, and reverb capabilities.
Source -
Echophon is favored for elaborate pitch-shifting, while the Z-DSP is noted for its flexibility and additional reverb options like the Halls of Valhalla card.
Source -
The 4ms DLD offers two independent delays and reverse functions, appealing to those who prioritize space efficiency with its 28HP size over the Z-DSP.
Source
Use cases and applications
-
Echophon can serve as a heart-of-patch sound design module, especially effective when integrated with Maths and Optomix for creating beat patterns from clock signals.
Source -
Echophon excels in minimalist setups, effectively layering simple drums and bass into complex beats, especially when paired with resonant low pass gates like the Doepfer A-101-2.
Source -
Clouds and its micro derivatives provide ambient mangling effects, including tape-delay and reverb modes, making it a cost-effective alternative to larger modules.
Source
User experience
-
Owners of the Mimeophon find it versatile yet challenging to control, often yielding wild and unexpected results.
Source -
Echophon is noted for its low-noise performance, contrasting the noise levels found in Mimeophon and Morphagene modules.
Source -
The module is described as having a "vintage digital" or moderately lo-fi sound, particularly when utilizing pitch shift features, which may not blend well with modern, cleaner productions.

"Received the Make Noise Soundhack Echophon and made a patch before working on the overview video, which will be released soon. Unfortunately a few people asked what is going on in the patch, so I should explain. There are 4 voices happening: Bass, Plucked Primary, Plucked Secondary, and Wash. Bass is a WMD Gamma Wave going into the Bionic Lester, using channel 2’s LP output it feeds into the mixer. The WMD Gamma Wave is being sequenced by the Z8000’s 16 step sequencer. Plucked Primary is the Tip Top Audio Z3000 going into the Make Noise Optomix being sequenced by the RENÈ. Plucked Secondary is a Hertz Donut being fed into the Make Noise Optomix and being sequenced by the BRAINS expanded Pressure Points. Wash is a Piston Honda being fed into the Blue Lantern Diode filter using the Bandpass mode. The Harvestman Double Andore is scanning the Bank/Programs. Everything is going into the mixer which is feeding the Make Noise Echophon."
Oh, so many FX! I collect them all like Garbage Pail Kids. Lets see off the top of my head, Tiptop ZDSP, MI clouds and rings, mungo D0, mungo G0, qu-bit RT 60, synth tech e560, e580, modcan dual delay, audio damage dub junior and spectre, ladik R-330, intellijel rainmaker, flame FX-6, Make Noise Erbe Verb and Echophon and problaby others I’m forgetting 🙂
