My favourite drive pedal!
When I first discovered this pedal it made me very curious as it wasn't laid out like traditional drive pedals. I love this particular pedal the most out of all the 3 variants that EBS have released with Billy.
This one is the most straight forward and has a presence that I've struggled to get with the other two. It's compressed low end and a drive all in one unit which for my setup is really handy.
Compared to the other two (Orange and Blue) units, I really like that the gain on the drive control is much more subtle and less overbearing if you favour low gain with just a touch of grit. I primarily use this with an EBS microbass 2 after it or with my Tronographic Rusty box before it. Sounds fantastic!
Preferred Settings + Usage:
Drive: 8/9,Tone: 1, Level: 10, Clean: 10 Compression: high.

Nice, but there’s something you should know.....
So I had this pedal after being sold on it’s ability to blend the clean & distortion sections(not many pedals could do that when this hit the market....), and the possibility of running separate effects loops for each. However, after being disappointed with the tones I was getting, I put it in a drawer for over a year. I realised that the reason I hated the tones is that the bottom end seems to disappear, the exact thing that ISN’T supposed to happen with this. I found out that this is because the distortion channel is out of phase with the clean channel. Trying an EHX LPB-1 in the distortion loop corrects the phase and the glorious bottom end returns..... any boost or drive pedal with an odd amount of op-amps should reverse the phase, so there are a few options here. I picked up a used LPB-1 on Ebay for a tenner, they’re only £40 new. Interestingly, version 2 of this pedal has a phase switch......

A lesson in phase
The newer EBS Billy Sheehan Deluxe seems to have added a switch to correct the massive, jaw-dropping, "How did anyone with ears possibly let this out of the factory?" problem with this original unit: The distortion and clean channels phase-cancel one another when blended. Placing a pedal that reverses phase in one of the loops will alleviate the problem. Or, you could simply not use this pedal. Mine was gigged once before being unceremoniously dumped in my drive and distortion drawer. Practical and flexible design, great marketing, bizarre oversight. At least this is one case in which the sequel should have no trouble surpassing the original!

"My high end pickup, I go into my EBS signature drive, which has clean tone, and mixes in distortion to whatever level you want, so you never lose your initial bass tone," says Billy Sheehan, at 5:50 in this Premier Guitar rig rundown.

Boh recently bought a few of the new, 2016 Bill Sheehan Signature Drive DELUXE pedals and replaced his original, purple versions. This photo shows that he is experimenting with having both versions on the board.
Boh's Twitter Translated Comment "The distortion one was returned to the old."
