Description

As with its 4 string counterpart, the Sterling 5 brings a big sound in a smaller more ergonomic design. Nine volt active 3 band EQ, 3 position pickup selector switch, and a ceramic humbucker with hum canceling phantom coil come standard, allowing the Sterling 5 to cut through any mix. An additional humbucker in the neck position is optional, adding even more tonal possibilities. Comfortable and compact, the Sterling 5 is well-suited for a wide range of players.

    Source

User experience

  • The B string on the SUB 5 is solid but is reported to be slightly weaker than that on the Ibanez SR505.

    Source
  • The neck features a severe taper, which some users love, but others find uncomfortable compared to non-tapered necks like those from Hofner.

    Source
  • Some owners report the bass to be heavy, recommending a wide strap for better comfort during play.

    Source
  • Despite its weight, the bass provides a sense of control over the sound, particularly in the mids, enhancing stage presence.

    Source
  • The bass is noted for having a visually striking purple sparkle finish with black hardware, preferred over the gold hardware on pricier models.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Sterling SUB 5's build quality is noted to be inferior to the RAY34CA and the Ibanez SR505.

    Source
  • The Sterling 5 is compared to Mexican Fenders in terms of quality, though it is noted to be less refined than American models.

    Source
  • The Sterling 5 is referred to alongside G&L Tribute L-2500 as a backup choice for those gigging regularly.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Initial setups often reveal dead frets and over-tightened truss rods, requiring significant adjustments to achieve optimal playability.

    Source
  • Owners recommend checking the truss rod before warranty expiration due to reports of it being maxed out.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners enjoy experimenting with the low B string to explore new musical possibilities or rearrange familiar tunes.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some basses have issues with tuners stripping easily, suggesting potential metal quality concerns.
