Ernie Ball is one of the most recognized names in guitar strings and accessories, founded by musician and entrepreneur Ernie Ball. Ball opened what is claimed to be the first dedicated guitar store in the United States in Tarzana, California in the late 1950s. After finding that players—particularly younger students—struggled with the heavy-gauge strings standard at the time, he began developing lighter sets, eventually creating the Slinky line in 1962. Offered in gauges ranging from Super Slinky to Regular Slinky and heavier, the strings became famous for their bright, balanced tone and comfortable feel, growing into the world's best-selling electric guitar strings.

In the early 1980s, Ernie Ball acquired the Music Man company, bringing guitar and bass manufacturing under the Ernie Ball Music Man name. That division produces electric guitars and basses—including the iconic StingRay bass—at a factory in San Luis Obispo, California, while the Ernie Ball string and accessories line continues operating under its own identity. The string catalog spans Slinky nickel wound electrics, Earthwood acoustic strings, and specialty formulations using cobalt, titanium, M-steel, and phosphor bronze. Accessories include picks, straps, capos, slides, volume pedals, and instrument care products.

Ernie Ball Slinky strings have become the choice of many prominent musicians across genres, including Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Slash, James Hetfield, Billie Joe Armstrong, The Edge, and Angus Young. The company has remained family-owned and is led by Brian Ball, continuing its operations from California.

Ernie Ball has 727 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars, Strings, and Electric Basses. Their gear is featured by 1258 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include Ryan "Fluff" Bruce, Jason Richardson, and John Petrucci.
