Features and functionality

  • The Oahu 15 watts Amp has been noted to pack a 12" speaker in a tiny cabinet, offering a unique clean sound at mid-volume levels.

    Source
  • The Oahu amp's volume knob doubles as the power switch, activating when turned up from 0, a vintage feature that may confuse modern users.

    Source

    Source
  • The Oahu amp is likened to Penncrest amps that use 3 12AX7 tubes and 2 6973s, suggesting a possible 15-watt output, despite higher claimed wattage on the faceplate.

User experience

  • It's reported that the amp's overdrive at full volume provides a glorious tone, making it ideal for cranked garage rock sounds.

    Source
  • Owners report a hum and thrumming sound from the tremolo circuit, even when not active, which could affect recording or live setups.

    Source

Build quality

  • The amp's build includes a combined volume and on/off switch, alongside a mostly useless tone control, indicating a minimalist design.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Ideal as a quiet apartment amp due to its manageable volume and dynamic responsiveness, which highlights the player's touch sensitivity.

    Source

Other

  • The amp's vintage aesthetics, including deco grill designs, contribute to its appeal among collectors and enthusiasts of historic music gear.

Setup and maintenance

  • Tubes don't require warming up, and standby switches can damage tubes if left on for long periods; the Oahu amp lacks a standby switch, avoiding this issue.

a winner

the original oahus are like the valco/supro version of the magnatone made Leilani amps...I had a dual 6v6 one for a while. Mine had like a 5y3 and octal preamp tubes, I think a couple 6SL7s. Very fat deluxe type tones. Stock speaker was a black frame Rola made in Chicago. Not bad, but not my favorite amp of this type. Definitely not as cool as a deluxe, a Gibson GA model or the Leilani I had... tone was like a supro model 24 or Coronado but tubbier so to speak, definitely farted out when overloaded but it woulda been a shame to mod it. I believe someone is making copies of these now with either 6V6 or EL84 tubes... I remember seeing a couple hiding in keith Richard's stage rig at one point.
