Description
The Sidstation was based on the legendary MOS6581 sound chip, originally found in the home computer Commodore 64. This gritty sounding synthesizer is the reason why Elektron as a company was formed in the first place.

What was your intro to the gear?
Nigel had bought the Monomachine, the keyboard version, and I started messing with it and thought: oooh! Then I bought one of my own. It’s still kind of a mystery to me now, I must say!
The first thing I did with it was just some polyphonic thing because I thought that’s what it did best, the way that it spread polyphony out.
It was wildly unpredictable, and it just fascinated me, the architecture of it and everything. I was kind of hooked after that. I bought the Machinedrum a month later. That was it. I was off. Then I got the Sidstation.
You’ve got the Sidstation as well?
Yes. That’s great (laughs), so fun! I’m fascinated by the fact that it’s got all that background noise in it.
Yeah, it never shuts up, does it?
Never shuts the f*** up (laughs)!
I actually sort of rediscovered it, playing around with it yesterday. I used just the noise on all three voices. It’s surprisingly easy to get that noise sounding really organic and natural.
It’s like a wild animal. You plug it in and it just sounds bigger than anything else, well (except) maybe the Prophet, in different ways. It sounds enormous, that’s the mystery to me.
To the point where it’s impossible to join in with any other instrument (laughs)!
Yeah, it’s its own thing, absolutely! You can filter it down, but you don’t want to do that.

In this article from Trash Audio, Venetian describes his ideal work station:
"A big perfect room with maybe a Funktion-One system for mains, or something clear and bangin. An old building with loads of empty rooms to use as reverbs. For about a year I had a good setup at an ex girlfriend’s place at her kitchen table. A laptop and a few little synths like an SE-1, a 303, one of those little original Evolvers and a Sid Station. I liked that setup, was mobile."
June 12, 2007, interview with sparks vs space:
SvS: So what do you use?
Ethan: It changes constantly. Sidstation. Monomachine. circuit bending. Korg MS2000B. Software emulations of 8 bit sounds. Samples. Micorkorg.
In this YouTube video, at 0:28, the Elektron SidStation can be partially seen near the Roland TB-303 right at the bottom of the screen. It can be recognized by the knobs, black markings and display.
From the "Tech Talk" section of the old KMFDM website:
Question (Astrix): I see from the lists in the Gear Section of the site that you still have the Sidstation (Elektron Sidstation "Ninja"). How do you like it? Do you use it and has it shown up on any tracks yet?
Answer (Sascha Konietzko): Yes I still have it. I love it and use it quite frequently. You can hear it all over the MDFMK album as well as ATTAK and WWIII.
Zombie Nation utilizes the Elektron SidStation for various tracks, as noted in a Twitter post where he discusses sampling two SidStations to create unique stereo samples.
