Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Electro-Harmonix Sovtek MIG-60.

Comparisons

  • The Mig 60 is a higher-gain alternative to the Mig 50, which is known for its clean headroom and suitability as a pedal platform.

    Source
  • Users compare the Two Notes Captor X and Suhr Reactive IR loader for recording, highlighting their different functionalities and features.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Mig 60 is described as a clone of the Marshall #2204 JCM800, offering both a clean LO input and a high-gain HI input for diverse tonal options.

    Source
  • The THD Hot Plate is noted for its tone change, especially in high-end frequencies, which can be compensated for by adjusting amp settings.

    Source
  • Some models, like the Torpedo Captor, include a load box for direct recording and a fixed -20dB attenuation setting, offering flexibility for recording setups.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners suggest the Mig 60 excels as a "nasty stoner doom machine" when the preamp is cranked, rather than as a clean pedal platform.

    Source
  • The Sovtek MIG-60 can be tamed for apartment use with an attenuator, allowing for high-gain tones at lower volumes.

    Source

User experience

  • Users note that while the Mig 50 provides a clean canvas for pedals, the Mig 60 is preferred for its dirtier, heavy rock sound.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners discuss adding a post-phase inverter master volume (PPIMV) for better volume control while maintaining tone integrity.

    Source
  • Employing a volume control in the effects loop can help manage volume without affecting tone, particularly if the amp has a series effects loop.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The Bugera PS1 is highlighted as an affordable attenuator option at $70, praised for its effectiveness.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • A bias probe simplifies the process without needing to measure by transformer shunt; it reads both tubes, usually showing about 41mV for a matched EL34 set.

    Source
  • The Eurotubes Octal Bias Probe measures in DC milliamps, offering accuracy by excluding screen current from the plate current measurement.

    Source
  • A burned or discolored grid resistor could indicate a need for replacement, especially if the amp has been unused for a long period.

    Source
  • Electrolytic capacitors degrade faster if the amp is left unpowered for extended periods, necessitating checks and potential replacements.

a russian JCM800

ind esign these amps are JCM800s, but the use of 6L6 tubes and all the Russian components give them a unique sound. These amps have gained quite a following distinct from the more popular 50 watt model that's like a tweed bassman in a head. This is not a budget marhsall, it will never sound like a marshall, but the sound it has is very, very good and falls well within the 80s marshall camp if that's your cup of tea.
