Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Mesa/Boogie Mark V:25.

Setup and maintenance

  • Utilizing a little black box in the FX loop helps achieve suitable gain at bedroom levels, making the amp more versatile for home play.

    Source
  • Running the amp through a 12" speaker instead of the stock 10" can significantly improve sound quality, particularly for high gain tones.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Despite its size, the Mark V:25 is praised for its big sound, making it suitable for both bedroom practice and band rehearsals.

    Source
  • Owners find the Mark V:25 versatile due to its multiple voices and EQ options, allowing for a wide variety of tones across musical styles.

    Source
  • The headphone jack is highlighted as a highly convenient feature for quiet practice sessions, especially when others are asleep.

    Source
  • The amp is noted for its exceptional performance in recording setups, particularly when paired with loadboxes, enhancing versatility in studio environments.

    Source
  • Owners find the Mark V:25 excels with bright cleans and vintage crunch, but its high gain channels may not suit extreme metal without tweaking.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some players prefer the Mark V 90-watt version for better volume control and fuller sound at low levels compared to the 25-watt model.

    Source
  • The Mark V:25 can sound and feel different from other EL-84 amps, offering a more "grown-up" tone and presence compared to typical EL-84 characteristics.

    Source
  • Compared to the 90-watt version, the 25-watt model shares identical channels but is noted for having fewer options, like missing some extra voicings.

    Source
  • The clean channel's FAT voicing is praised for achieving a Fender-like clean sound, offering a tonal alternative within the same amp.

    Source
  • The Mark V:25 offers tighter, darker tones than the more open Rectifier, but lacks the latter's thicker wall of sound.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The Mark V:25 was available for $999 at Sweetwater, noted as an exceptional deal compared to used prices.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Users recommend using a JHS Little Black Amp Box or a quality volume pedal in the FX loop for better volume management at home.

    Source
  • Using a Rat pedal as an overdrive in front of the amp is recommended for enhancing its tone.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Mark V:25 has a sensitive volume control, making it challenging to achieve consistent low-volume tones without additional equipment like an attenuator or volume pedal.

    Source
  • The amp's footswitch allows activation of the built-in graphic EQ, adding convenience and flexibility during live performances.

    Source
  • The Mark V:25's EQ knobs are pre-gain for distortion texture; sliders are post-gain for tone shaping, enabling tight metal low end with low bass settings.

    Source
  • The reverb knobs are located on the back, which some users find inconvenient when making quick adjustments.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report that the amp is loud for its 25-watt rating, making it suitable for live performances with mic support but challenging to keep up with a loud drummer unmic'd.

    Source
  • Switching the amp's EQ off temporarily can help re-tune ears to its mid-focused nature, making re-adjustment easier.

Critic Reviews

Mesa/Boogie Mark Five: 25 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Mesa/Boogie Mark V:25 is a giant in a small package, offering a remarkable range of 12 sounds and a standout CabClone feature for direct output. This amp's tones are sensational, with a rhythm channel delivering clean and vibrant tones, and a lead channel that nails the iconic Boogie overdrive. Despite its compact size, it holds its own against larger amps, making it one of the best small amps available. However, its price is a sticking point, as the need for a separate cab raises the overall cost. Despite this, its performance and features justify the investment for serious players.

Mesa Boogie mark five 25

It is so small! It is only 7 kilograms!!!It has serial fx loop and even spring reverb! I use it for small gigs and private partys with one or two Mesa recto 1X12 V30 cabinets or even without'em, thanks to the built-in cabclone which sounds amazing and is perfect for badroom practice! On live i mix the sound on two channels-60%mic, 40% cabclone. Suporting two fully independent channels with six style modes, the Mesa/Boogie Mark Five: 25 tube amp head gives you legendary Mark Series preamp tone combined with Mesa's proprietary Dyna-Watt 2 x EL84 output section. This Mark Series amp gives you maximum portability and responsiveness. Dial in everything from sweet cleans to roaring leads with extra midrange crunch and aggression when you push the EL84 power tubes hard. Factor in the built-in Cabclone speaker-emulated direct output, and you have an amazing gigging and recording amp with the Mesa/Boogie Mark Five: 25 tube amplifier.

Killer Amp

This thing is absolutely worth the price. Can play pretty much any genre from it. It's more difficult to find tones that don't work than tones that do. Versatility doesn't mean that it doesn't sound superb though. Might be the best sounding amp I've played through.
