Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about TC Helicon VoiceLive 2 Floor-Based Vocal Processor.

Setup and maintenance

  • It's recommended to turn off effects between songs to avoid unwanted reverb or delays during stage banter, which can sound unprofessional.

    Source
  • Inserting a high-pass filter before the pedal can significantly clean up the effects and improve vocal clarity.

    Source
  • Feedback issues often arise from improper gain settings; use a DI box to adjust signal levels before hitting the mixer to reduce feedback potential.

    Source
  • Proper microphone choice is crucial; switching to a mic with a tighter polar pattern can help reduce feedback if other methods fail.

    Source
  • When using vocal effects live, splitting the signal to provide both dry and wet outputs can give sound engineers more control over the mix.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The pedal's various digital gain stages and filters can alter a mic's usual behavior, even if the effects are bypassed.

    Source
  • The VoiceLive 2's adaptive EQ and compression can lead to feedback issues, as it sends a thinned-out, harsher signal to FOH.

    Source
  • Users advise against using distortion without a proper sound check, and suggest pairing it with a gate to mitigate feedback issues during live performances.

    Source
  • The VoiceLive 2 is noted for its ability to sync with a MIDI clock, allowing for tempo-synced effects and loops, which is beneficial for electronic music performances.

    Source
  • The pedal's XLR outputs are line level, which may require a 30dB pad when connecting to mic level inputs on a mixer to prevent excessive gain.

    Source
  • The TC Helicon VoiceLive 2 can output a signal that's 35dB hotter than typical mic levels, requiring careful gain management on both the pedal and mixing console.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some engineers prefer Lexicon plate emulation over the TC Helicon's reverb, citing better control over send levels and pre-delay for clarity and atmosphere.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners find that the pedal's sonic processing often reduces the mic's bottom end, impacting the overall vocal sound.

    Source
  • The pedal is praised for its artistic flexibility, allowing users to tailor different sound effects for individual songs, enhancing the live performance experience.

    Source
  • Using in-ear monitors instead of wedges can help mitigate feedback issues, as wedges often exacerbate feedback when using vocal effects.

    Source
  • Vocal effects like distortion and reverb can drastically lower the feedback threshold, particularly in loud band settings or with wedge monitors.

    Source

User experience

  • Users express that TC Helicon's reverb sounds inferior compared to professional audio gear used by sound engineers, despite its convenience for personal practice.

    Source
  • Owners emphasize the importance of editing patches, particularly disabling unnecessary modules and saving appropriate patch volumes to prevent unexpected issues during live shows.

    Source
  • Some users report that the pedal's top end can sound thin and feedback-prone, even with effects off, making it challenging to use in large venues.

The core processor for my saxophones!

This unit is made by vocalists for vocalists, but actually becomes the ultimate live-gig processor for a mic'd saxophone, all in one convenient portable package. The VoiceLive series gives you the ultimate doubler and harmonizer, because it doesn't sound like an effect pedal ....it sounds more realistic! In my case, all the stock default settings had to be changed & tweaked for the sonic fidelity of a "saxophone" (not a vocalist), but it does everything extremely well, especially the harmony processing. For me, it gets used primarily for unison-doubling, unison-octaves, and 2 to 4-part harmony. The 2 biggest features on this device are: 1) HARMONY INTERVAL SETTING. I can "manually" set-up (initially program) harmonies into my presets quickly and easily using a keyboard connected to the Helicon's MIDI-In jack. OR ...I can elect to have the Helicon automatically set the intervals for me "in real-time while I'm playing" using (once again) a MIDI connection from the keyboard player's keyboard to the Helicon's MIDI-In jack, or from an analog-audio signal from the sound-mixer into the Helicon's audio-in jack. 2) Set-ups and/or harmony-intervals can be saved as SEQUENTIAL PRESETS and RECALLED ON THE FLY at any time during the song USING THE PEDALBOARD SWITCHES while you're playing. The VoiceLive 3 is probably a slightly better unit, but truthfully, the older VoiceLive 2 packs a punch and is truly amazing!

Hope to use it soon, but I know its awesome

Only used it a couple times just because I haven't figured out my live set just yet, but it is an amazingly powerful vocal processor pedalboard and it has tons of presets and it is built to be very durable.
