Description

Introducing the Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff Pi - a faithful reissue of the coveted late-'70s classic, designed to deliver the iconic fuzz effect at a pocket-friendly price. This compact pedal leverages op-amps rather than transistors and three gain stages instead of four to generate its signature sound. Adored by many, including Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins, the Op-Amp Big Muff was a significant component of the band's unique sound in their 1993 album, Siamese Dream.

This reissue retains the magic of the original while being encased in a robust, die-cast chassis. It also incorporates practical enhancements such as true bypass switching, preserving your tone when the pedal is not in use. The controls for volume, tone, and sustain allow you to quickly dial in the fuzz-laden and explosive textures your music demands. An additional tone bypass toggle temporarily circumvents the pedal's tone circuit for maximum output and aggression.

Key Features:

  • Faithful reissue of the late-'70s op-amp Big Muff Pi
  • Utilizes op-amps and three gain stages for its unique sound
  • Compact, die-cast chassis for improved durability
  • True bypass switching to preserve tone when not in use
  • Independent volume, tone, and sustain controls
  • Tone bypass switch for added power
  • Powered by a 9-volt battery or standard 9-volt adapter (sold separately)

Electro-Harmonix Op Amp Big Muff review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff Pi delivers a nostalgic blast of fuzz, ideal for fans of the Smashing Pumpkins' signature sound. This compact pedal impresses with its true bypass switching and a tone bypass switch, offering gritty, grainy distortion perfect for heavy riffing. While the tone knob can lead to extremes, the sweet spots in between provide versatility. With a faithful recreation of a rare Big Muff variant, it's a solid choice for those seeking edgy, fuzzy distortion at an affordable price. The review highlights no significant downsides, making it a favorable pick.

Quick Hit: Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Electro-Harmonix Op-Amp Big Muff Pi is a distinct member of the Big Muff family, delivering a unique high-mid forward tone that slices through any mix. It offers an even distortion spectrum at a budget-friendly price. However, those seeking the traditional Muff's fat low end might find it lacking, and at the highest gain levels, it can sound slightly thin. Nonetheless, if you desire a fuzz that stands out in a crowded sonic space, this pedal's aggressive and cutting qualities make it a worthwhile contender.

Legendary Fuzz

It's a classic. Brilliant for that late 80s/early 90s fuzz tone. It's thick, vibey, genuinely great pedal. It's been on my board since I bought it and I can't imagine it not being on my board. It's a go-to.

Big Muff on steroids

It's everything the Big Muff is but better in every way. More grit, more clarity and more sustain!!!!!!!!

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Volume at 12 o'clock Tone switch ON and Tone knob at 11 o'clock Sustaine at 9 o'clock

Best muff out there.

Total smashing pumpkins-esque goodness, but can also do the heavy sustain from weezer's blue and the lighter fuzz from bush's sixteen stone.

Pumpkin Pie

Being a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, I love this pedal. When compared to the classic NYC reissue, this has more balls especially when you bypass the tone circuit. Build quality is solid as usually, though the sound is a one trick pony, you either love or hate Muffs. You have to play it into the clean channel, no amp gain or drive at all, unless you want the notes to choke.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

Volume - 14:00 Tone - OFF Sustain - anywhere from 13:00 to max

Op amp is the greatest big muff I've ever known...

Don't wait till tomorrow (to buy this pedal) Tomorrow's to far away (to wait to hear this wall of fuzz) I'll burn my ears out before I hear (another trash fuzz) I wanted more (fuzz) Than life (distortion pedals) could ever grant me Bored by the chore of saving face OP AMP Big Muff is the greatest BIG MUFF I've ever known.

drrrty_harris

If you grew up listening to 90s rock, you need this pedal!

I've tried quite a few pedals in my day, and still have a respectable amount on my current pedalboard. That said, this is by far my favorite way to crank up my tone. While the original was around in the 70s, this recreation was popularised by Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins and really is the sound of post-Nirvana grunge. But it doesn't end there... You can tweak this baby to play everything from Hendrix, to Neil Young, to Green Day. Really is a great pedal.

The Smashing Pumpkins sound in a box

I watched one demo of this with Billy Corgan playing it, bought it based on that video, and I haven't wanted a single other fuzz pedal since I first switched it on

GREAT SETUP!!

I would be lost without it

The big muff is a must have for any pedal board, it was the first pedal I ever purchased and I still keep it on almost all the time. It’s a sound that is unmatched in my opinion, and I could not recommend it more.

fuzzhe_d

First pedal in my life.

Of course, at the time of purchase, I was influenced by Billy Corgan. Its not only great for Siamese Dream / Smashing Pumpkins tone, but its also good for grunge, shoegaze, garage rock stuff (Dinosaur Jr. , White Stripes, MBV and others ) One of the greatest modern fuzz pedals. LOVE IT!

Great Big Muff

For about 9 years i've had a Little Big Muff which I've loved. When i started seeing videos that EH was reissuing the op-amp Big Muff, famously used by Billy Corgan and James Iha on Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream album, i was intrigued. I listened to some clips, and loved the sound of it. I made it known that it was something i would like and my wife got it for me. Actually playing it i have to say, it blows my Little Big Muff out of the water. It's a tremendous sounding Big Muff pedal. To my ears the Op-Amp sounds a bit brighter, and has a bit more clarity while still giving that Big Muff wall of sound. Not necessarily ideal for drone metal, but otherwise, it's a tremendous pedal.

He was involved in the making and promotion of this reissue pedal (the orange color is probably a reference to Smashing Pumpkins) with Electro Harmonix. He used his Op Amp Big Muff to get the Siamese Dream sound, so a standard Big Muff won't quite get the same sound. It'll get you close, but the Op Amp version is the one you want if you're trying to get the same gear he used. This video shows him using the pedal & talking about it.
