Review: Tobias Toby Standard-IV Electric Bass By Epiphone - Bass Musician Magazine, The Face of Bass

bassmusicianmagazine.com

The Tobias Toby Standard-IV Electric Bass is a delightful fusion of comfort and affordability, making it a solid choice for players at any level. With a durable radiata body and a rich tone from its passive electronics, it delivers versatility across genres. However, while the passive pickups provide decent sound, some players might desire the punch of active electronics. Overall, this bass strikes a commendable balance between quality and price, but players seeking advanced tonal options may want to look elsewhere.

Tobias Standard (Left Hand)

Purchased 1997, found in hole-in-the-wall shop in Princeton, WV. Rare left-handed model

Has toured with me ever since, except for several years missing from theft – finally located and recovered (insure those instruments folks!) Tone is like nothing else I’ve ever played. Perfect midrange growl, funky bottom and crisp tops.

Neck, while finished has never been “sticky” although I do occasionally clean well and give a light rubdown with steel wool to allow it to breathe.

Is a very light maintenance instrument with a full body. HIGHLY recommended if you can get your hands on one.

An extremely rare 90's Japan-made version of the legendary Tobias USA Basic bass, just as they were handbuilt by Mike Tobias in his Californian pre-Gibson workshop. • A four string bass from the Standard series. A premium model by Tobias, a high end bass builder, famous since late 80's for his high quality, exceptionally comfortable and ergonomical instruments. Made in Japan at the Terada factory in Nagoya.

• Finish: Natural, with black hardware. • Body: Ash. • Neck: Maple. Neck-thru construction. • Scale: 34" - standard long scale. • Fretboard: Rosewood, with dot inlays. • Frets: 24. • Nut: Corian. • Headstock: Natural, with the inlaid logo. • Tuners: Grover. • Bridge: Original Tobias. • Pickups: 2x Bartolini. • Electronics: Volume, Balance, Bass/Treble. • Excellent quality of selected woods, craftsmanship, handling and sound!
