M. Ward's Gear
Ward uses a black Johnny A as can be seen in this picture. In an interview with Gibson.com it has been said: "I heard you were a fan of Gibson’s Johnny A guitar. What do you like about it?
Everything. I was at the Gibson showroom, probably about four years ago, and I love electric guitars with whammy bars. This was one of the few they had in the room with a whammy and so it was like, “Let’s try this out.” Just everything about it was extremely responsive, no matter where you are on the neck. It’s just the perfect guitar for me. It’s not too heavy, it’s not too light. It just does everything I ask it to. (laughs)
Do you use it live or in the studio?
Both. I have two of them now. One is a newer model. It just keeps getting better, I have to say."
East Side Guitar Repair, Ward's guitar tech, posted this picture on Facebook saying that he uses Malekko Wolftone Sloika Distortion.
I can tell you that he sounded great at the 9:30 Club last night with a pedalboard full of Boss pedals and an Ibanez delay. All powered by a (wait for the collective gasp from the Gear Page folks) a One Spot.
Here's the list: Boss TU-2 Tuner Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive Boss RC-20XL Loop Station Boss FRV-1 Fender 63' Reverb Pedal Ibanez AD9 Delay
About his Gibsons he said: "Well, I have a Hummingbird and a J-45, and I love them both equally. It’s just one of those things where you like how it feels around your shoulders. I play with a lot of different guitar tunings and it’s important that they stay in tune. The Hummingbird, the J-45 and the Johnny A have all been put to the test and I’m happy to say that they continue to surpass my expectations." - Interview with Gibson.com (http://www.gibson.com/news-lifestyle/features/en-us/she-and-him-0630.aspx)

Ward’s electric was double-amped through a Fender Deluxe and a Silvertone that [producer Pierre] De Reeder miked with SM57s, the idea being that the two amp sounds could be selected, blended or panned at will. Ward’s acoustic went to a Neumann KM84.
In this picture Ward can be seen playing his J-45. About this one (and his other Gibsons as well) he said: "Well, I have a Hummingbird and a J-45, and I love them both equally. Used for the vocals on Volume 3, as mentioned in this April 15, 2015 Electronic Musician interview.
Deschanel usually sings into a Neumann U47. “I have done a number of mic shoot-outs to see what we liked best,” she says. “But we don’t always universally stick to [the U47]; I love an RCA 77, too.”
On this project, [producer Pierre] de Reeder placed U47s for Deschanel and Ward; both also went to Neve 1073 mic pre’s, and Deschanel’s vocal took a small amount of 1176 compression. “Nothing’s heavily compressed,” de Reeder points out. “It’s just barely rocking the needle and making sure everything’s in control.”
All of the other inputs went through preamps in Sound Factory’s custom API console, then straight to a Studer A827 24-track tape machine.

And that's it folks. Take two Gibson Johnny A's (one tuned to D6), add these pedals, and a Fender Twin Reverb, and it sounds amazing.
