Matthew Bellamy's Gear
A Fender Standard Stratocaster Sunburst Electric Guitar was used extensively during the 2nd Law tour performances and also the recording of the 2nd Law album by Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy.
As seen in this photo, Matt used this amp for the recording of Resistance.
Before switching to the rack-mounted Line 6 Echo Pro, Bellamy used the Line 6 DL4 as his main delay pedal for the Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry Tours.
In an interview, when asked about his go-to amp, Matt Bellamy mentions that he uses a Marshall JCM800 modified by Matt Wells. He says:
I tend to always use a combination of a Vox AC30 blended with a more metal-type of amp, like a Diezel—a high-gain amp—or my Marshall JCM800, which was modified by [NYC-based amp guru] Matt Wells to be a much more high-gain version. I like to have that combination of saturation with clarity at the same time. The Vox has a clearer tone and provides the clarity and attack, while the saturation and high sustain comes from the Diezel or Marshall. That’s always been my go-to and that’s what I tend to use live.
In this live version of muse's "Bliss", Bellamy is using the Juno 60 instead of using a guitar as he usually does when playing this song, He uses the Synth as a Arpeggiator.
In this image from Muse's studio recording of the album "Drones", we can see the Jazz Chorus-120 wired up.
Matthew Bellamy uses the Teenage Engineering OP-1 Portable Synthesizer during the creation of the album "Drones," as shown in a video on Muse's Instagram, where he's exploring synth sounds.
This pickup is fitted onto a few of Matt's Manson guitars, including the Copper Bomber and the Red Glitters. It is in fact a Bare Knuckle Nailbomb fitted with a Manson-engraved cover.
Matthew Bellamy used the PRS Billy Martin Electric Guitar during Muse's live shows in 2006.
Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy has been spotted using a Gretsch G1627 Synchromatic Sparkle Jet Electric Guitar during the Festival de Cannes, in France.
After detailing various guitar amp heads Matt Bellamy uses, his guitar tech Jason Baskin says: "...those are all run through a head switcher, and switch it to a cabinet underneath the stage. It's a Mills Acoustics Afterburner... with Vintage 30s."
With 22 frets with a scale length of 25 1/2", Muse's Matthew Bellamy used a Peavey EVH Wolfgang Electric Guitar extensively during the Showbiz tours of 1999 and 2000.
Matthew Bellamy is associated with the JHS Crayon overdrive pedal, as noted in a post by JHS Pedals on Instagram. The post highlights that Matt used the JHS Colour Box extensively on the latest Muse album, suggesting that the Crayon would be a fitting addition to his gear lineup.
From Bellamy's guitar tech: "...the MXR EQ which we use for sort of a mid-boost in a couple of songs..."
A Soldano Decatone 100-Watt Triple Channel Amp Head was used during Muse's Showbiz tour by lead guitarist and singer Matt Bellamy.
Bellamy is shown to be using a See-Thru Red, Jay Turser Electric hybrid resonator guitar in the music video for "Plug in Baby" fist at :07 and then throughout the video.
Mix engineer Tommaso Colliva on recording Drones : "Matt always tracks the vocals by himself. I set things up for him, and the mic pre we use is always a Neve 1073, usually with an 1176 compressor. I dial in some settings and he may nudge things up or down, depending on the kind of vocals he’s tracking. We also very occasionally used a Mercury M76 tube mic pre, and on a few songs Matt wanted to hold the mic in his hand, but we didn’t like the sound of a dynamic mic too much, so we ended up using a FET47 which I took out of the mic mount and wrapped in foam. "
In this Instagram photo posted by Marshall amps, Matt Bellamy's Marshall 2555X Silver Jubilee Reissue can be seen. It was used for Muse's show at Reading & Leeds Festival. The caption reads:
New amp day for @mattbellamy of @muse: 2555X Silver Jubilee full stack ready for @officialrandl 🤘🏻#marshallamps #liveformusic
In this image, Bellamy is clearly using the Manson Doubleneck guitar. This guitar, hence the name, has two necks: The bottom is a standard rosewood neck, while the top is a fretless ebony neck, with a string dampener. Both necks have two P-90 soapbar pickups, as well as Fernandes Sustainers. This guitar also features black binding and the same knobs found on the Delorean.
Matt Bellamy's rig for the Black Holes and Revelations tour includes the Avalon VT-737sp Mic Preamp.
In this picture, the Kemper Profiling Amplifier is also a part of the gear used on the "The 2nd Law" Tour.
In the Knights of Cydonia music video, Matt plays his Manson Chrome Bomber. Made as a modification of the Manson Rust Relic, this guitar has a built-in Fuzz Factory, an Ibanez Lo Pro Edge Floyd Rose Tremolo bridge, and unlike the regular Manson Bomber, lacks a MIDI strip and killswitch.
He used ATH M50x while recording the album 'Drones'. Can see it on 6:35.
Bellamy used two of Iceman ICX120 models, a compact version of the regular Iceman, which was produced between 2000 and 2004. Like with the Ibanez Destroyer, Matt had two of these in his arsenal, both used during the Hullabaloo era. Both appeared to have stock elements with no special circuits. Both guitars were destroyed.
Matt Bellamy used an Iceman to perform Bliss at Leeds University on the 26th of May 2001. It's especially visible at 0:22.
On the 11th of August 2001, at the Saint-Malo Fort de Saint-Père 2001 gig, Bellamy used his Ibanez Iceman to perform "Muscle Museum" and "Bliss"
Matt Bellamy also used an orange Iceman to perform "Agitated" and "Hyper Music" at the all famous hullabaloo concert on the 28th of October 2001, before it was thrown into an amp and destoyed.
After 2001, neither guitars have been seen again as they are both destroyed.
This photo of Matthew Bellamy's effects rack (used during the Black Hole and Revelations tour) shows he uses the MXR M-107 Phase 100 Effects Pedal. It can be seen in the pedal tray, to the left of the gray Keeley Compressor pedal.
Matt is seen using this amp (on top of the Soldano head) in this photo of a live performance, during Muse's early days.
Matt uses the Axe FX for his effects and the Kemper amps to take care of the amp modeling.
Mix engineer Tommaso Colliva on recording Drones : "Pedal–wise there was a lot going on, but there are a few pedals that get used a lot, like the ZVex Fuzz Factory, the ZVex Super Hard On, which gives a nice clean boost so it distorts the amplifier, the Super Duper, and the Machsonic Thrust Drive pedal, which is made by someone in Turkey, and which we used with the Ampeg head for a very scooped–out fuzz sound, the JHS Colour Box, which mimics the sound of the Neve 1073, and a Roland SDD 3000 pedal."
Also seen in this picture from Muse's MUSEum with gear used by Matt and Chris over the years.
Matt used the modded JCM800 for Simulation Theory. Matt's modded version allows the JCM800 to be more of a high-gain amp.
