Awesome Grail Tone from marshall's best years.
Super well made and sounds fantastic. One of the first channel switching designs with great sounding efx loop. Clean sounds awesome and overdrive channel is sonic Nirvana.

great review.... not sure I would agree with your opinion on the tone having owned the head version, but hey, there's something for everyone
It definitely took some time to dial in the right tone but once you know the particularities of the circuit, you can reach some awesome sounds. Some may become discouraged about this fact. I use an external eq on the clean channel to give it some sparkle and use a light overdrive on both channels to give me basically four channels. Anyway, glad you liked it! cheers.

I tend to always use a combination of a Vox AC30 blended with a more metal-type of amp, like a Diezel—a high-gain amp—or my Marshall JCM800, which was modified by [NYC-based amp guru] Matt Wells to be a much more high-gain version. I like to have that combination of saturation with clarity at the same time. The Vox has a clearer tone and provides the clarity and attack, while the saturation and high sustain comes from the Diezel or Marshall. That’s always been my go-to and that’s what I tend to use live.
