Toro y Moi's Gear
The songs on Toro Y Moi's album "Anything in Return" were "...written with live performance in mind, augmented by a few tricks, such as sampling chords in the SP- 404SX and using its playback to stagger delivery on tracks including 'Rose Quartz.'"
"Fruity Loops. Then it went to me trying other stuff, and I moved on to Reason and tried that out and Ableton."
Toro y Moi's Chaz uses Reason to record his ideas and tracks. He's a fan of Reason's NN-XT sampler and Thor synth. He recorded his album "Causers of This" almost entirely in Reason, but for later albums uses it as more of a quick way to record ideas, before taking them into a proper studio. Chaz says "I still work within Reason for most tracks, but I'm not interested in maintaining any specific workflow..."
Speaking about his favorite pieces of gear, Chaz says "...I recently got this Yamaha DX7s synth. It's awesome. I'm using that on everything right now."
When asked about his favorite pieces of gear, Toro Y Moi responds "Probably my Moogerfoogers. I can't leave them alone. I use the Cluster Flux a lot on the keys. It's just a chorus pedal that can also be a weird LFO pedal."
When talking about recording live instruments for his 2011 album "Underneath The Pine," Toro Y Moi says "[I also used a] bass, just a Squire Bronco."
Starting with his 2011 album "Underneath The Pine," Toro Y Moi frequently makes use of the Roland JX-3P synth.
Chaz talks about mixing his album "Anything in Return" at Different Fur Studios. He was keen on not using too many software synths for the album, and said he made use of the studio's Korg MS2000.
"I use a Shure SM57 for demos, and if I'd like a really crisp vocal sound I like to use an AKG C-1000. But my favorite is the SM57 - beautiful design inside and out. It allows close mic placing and picks up vocals better."
Lead sounds on Toro Y Moi's album "Anything in Return" were processed by running them through the ZVex Instant Lo-Fi Junky Modulation Pedal.
Chaz had recorded vocals in Reason for his album "Anything in Return," but when he went into the studio they were re-recorded for the most part using the Shure SM7B Vocal Mic.

Speaking about the recording process for Toro Y Moi's album "Anything in Return," Different Fur Studios owner Patrick Brown says the drums often went through an Empirical Labs EL8-X Distressor, Empirical Labs EL-7 FATSO Jr., and GML 8200 EQ, "...to fatten them up, make them hit harder, make the kick really snap, and to add a little bit of softness and harmonic on the top end so they didn't sound too brittle out of Reason."
Chaz shows his op-1 on this pic he posted on Instagram.
