Founded in 1946 in Linden, New Jersey by Everett Hull and Stanley Michaels under the name Michael-Hull Electronic Labs, the company was built around a pickup Hull invented that attached to the end pin of an upright bass — the "amplified peg," or Ampeg. By 1949, Hull became the sole proprietor and renamed the venture the Ampeg Bassamp Company, focusing on amplification solutions for bass players at a time when dedicated bass amplification was essentially nonexistent.
Two models define Ampeg's legacy above all others. The B-15 Portaflex, introduced in 1960, was a flip-top combo amplifier that became a fixture in recording studios throughout the decade, used by session greats including James Jamerson, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and John Paul Jones. The SVT (Super Vacuum Tube), introduced in 1969, delivered 300 watts of output — extraordinary for its era — and quickly became a standard for touring rock bands. The SVT's pairing with the 8x10 bass cabinet became one of the most iconic stage rigs in rock history.
Ampeg's lineup spans all-tube and solid-state amplifier heads, bass cabinets in a range of configurations, combo amplifiers, and bass effects pedals. The Classic Series preserves the all-tube heritage of the SVT line, while more affordable series extend the brand's reach across a broad range of players. Ampeg is widely regarded as the benchmark for bass amplification, particularly in rock, funk, R&B, and soul contexts, and its gear has been a mainstay in both live and recording environments for decades.
Ampeg has 324 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Combo Guitar Amplifiers, Bass Amplifier Cabinets, and Bass Amplifier Heads. Their gear is featured by 1131 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include Lucas Skinner, Juan Alderete, and Josh Homme. Ampeg's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
