Features and functionality

  • The volume control effectively reduces volume without altering tone, making it suitable for home use.

    Source
  • The pentode/triode switch may affect headroom rather than volume at low levels.

    Source
  • An unusual muting FET, controlled by the input jack's switching contact, could cause sound issues if corroded.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend replacing stock Rubies preamp tubes with NOS preamp tubes for improved sound quality.

    Source
  • An added 56-ohm resistor in series before R68 may cool the bias in the push-pull amp design, affecting overall tone and responsiveness.

Comparisons

  • A proper Hiwatt SE2121 cab with Fane F75 speakers significantly enhances the amp's performance compared to generic cabs.

    Source

    Source
  • When comparing to the Roland JC-40, the OR15 is noted for its dirty tones, while the Roland excels in clean tones and pedal compatibility.

    Source

Use cases and applications

    Source

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The ECC83 filaments going dark indicate a potential DC heater supply issue, possibly linked to a faulty bridge diode (BD302 or KBPC302).

    Source
  • A bridge diode replacement resolved intermittent sound loss, highlighting the importance of checking diode functionality in troubleshooting.

Hiwatt T20 Amp

guitarinteractivemagazine.com

The Hiwatt T20 Combo offers an affordable entry into the world of valve amps, sporting a cool design and a reliable build. Made in China, it doesn't feature the UK craftsmanship of pricier Hiwatts, but it maintains the brand's sturdy reputation. While the amp includes useful EQ controls and an effects loop, sound quality is where it falls short. Reviewers found the tone somewhat flat and lifeless, with the clean channel lacking depth and the dirty channel offering a fuzzy rather than gain-rich experience. Despite this, the T20's price point makes it a solid choice for budget-conscious players seeking classic Hiwatt aesthetics.

Hiwatt T20 Review : Hiwatt It All - Audiofanzine

audiofanzine.com

The Hiwatt T20 Combo delivers a classic British clean sound in a compact package, ideal for home use and small gigs. Its clean channel shines with clarity and works well with effects, maintaining the legendary Hiwatt tone. However, the lead channel is less versatile, offering a distinctly muddy and grainy sound that may not appeal to all players. This channel suits punk and classic rock but struggles with modern styles and humbucker pickups. Despite lacking an FX loop, the amp's clean channel handles effects chains well. Overall, for its price, the T20 is a solid choice for those seeking a distinctive clean tone but may not satisfy those looking for more versatile distortion.

Very happy

One of my favourite amps in the world. Takes pedals like a champ, Very clean headroom. Don’t be fooled by 20 watts, this thing is very loud and can hold up to a drummer even on the 10 watt setting. No matter what pedals or amp setting i use it’s very usable, Only one thing to say is that the overdrive channel sucks and would’ve been better if it was a bright channel or a presence boost. Ether way this is a very good amplifier if you’re looking for a pedal platform or something that can stay clean.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

The settings actually differ for what i’m using it for and what room i’m in. But most of the time i like to have it clear and warm with a little bit of sparkle in the High end.

So it would be like: Bass. 70% Middle. 40-60% Treble. 30-60%

Excelent choice!

Portable, ideal for studio recording, for rehersals, and for live shows. Very good reverb. 5 or 3 valves switch
