Studer is a Swiss-founded designer and manufacturer of professional audio equipment, established in Zürich in 1948 by engineer Willi Studer. The company first rose to prominence in the 1950s with its line of professional tape machines, including the Dynavox series, and became a fixture of the world's top recording studios through models like the J37 four-track (famously used by The Beatles on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band), the A80, A800, and A820 multitrack recorders. Studer also spawned the Revox brand in 1951 as a consumer-oriented offshoot.
As the industry moved from analog tape to digital, Studer transitioned into large-format mixing consoles and broadcast infrastructure. The Vista series — including the Vista 1, 5, 7, 9, V, and X — introduced the Vistonics "knobs-on-glass" user interface in 2003 and became a standard in live broadcast, sports production, and post. The OnAir line (OnAir 1500, 2500, 3000) serves radio broadcasters, and the D950 was an early large-frame digital console.
Studer passed through several owners, including Motor-Columbus and Harman International, before its brand and intellectual property were acquired by Canadian broadcast manufacturer Evertz Microsystems. Under Evertz, the catalog continues with the Vista BRAVO, Vista 1 Carbon, Vista V and X consoles, the Micro Series for radio and small-scale production, Infinity DSP cores, and the D21m/D23m modular I/O systems.
