Setup and maintenance
-
The Fender baritone neck is a 27” scale replacement, easily transforming standard Strats into baritones.
Source -
A 30” scale, typically seen in short scale basses, is used, though some suggest a 26.5” or 27” scale is more suitable for A standard tuning.
Source -
Tuner holes in the neck required slight enlargement, and an additional hole was needed for the contoured neck plate.
Source -
A pre-filed baritone nut needed extensive sanding for width and neck profile, yet it remained excessively high.

Comparisons
-
The quarter pound pickups are described as similar to P90s, yet retaining classic Strat characteristics, and they pair well with high-output humbuckers like the Duncan Distortion or Invader.

Review for 27.5 inch Baritone Conversion Neck
So I do have a Baritone Stratocaster (Partscastor really) and my review is going to be much less on the guitar itself since I made it to my specs and more about the neck I bought from fender.
So Fender started selling the Sub Sonic Stratocaster and Telecaster baritone conversion necks about a year or so ago. I bought the strat conversion neck with the Pao Ferro fingerboard for my partscaster project. The necks are manufactured in Mexico and they aren't bad out of the box. I noticed the fret ends needed to be rounded off and the fretboard was actually super dry. A little lemon oil and a polish wheel on my dremmel took care of those things. Also the nut needed to be cur for baritone strings but I have a fret filing kit at home. It was a perfect fit for the squire body I was using, it did need a shim or but honestly it's not that big of a thing to make and install one yourself, it bolted on there perfectly. It's comfortable to play and the polish on the neck doesn't bother me that much. It's also MUCH MUCH cheaper to build a baritone guitar from parts than it is to buy a fender sub-sonic wholesale. The neck ultimately needs a little work out of the box but honestly without the work I did it was still super playable. This is the kind of product that requires a little DIY gumption, but nothing out of reach thanks to the internet.
