Features and functionality
-
The Fruity Limiter's default settings often cause distortion when adjusting attack and release on slightly clipping signals.
Source -
The compressor and limiter functions are integrated, with the compressor affecting the sound first, followed by gain, limiter, and saturation.
Source -
The sidechain feature allows track-specific compression control, enabling dynamic interaction between tracks, like bass and drums.
Source -
The plugin includes noise gate controls, where the threshold, release, and gain adjust the gating effect for managing sound cutoffs.
Source -
Adjusting the Curve setting to 4 or 5 can improve sidechain compression, with suggested attack at 0 and release between 30-100ms for better control.
Source -
The Fruity Limiter's default settings are critiqued for being inadequate, prompting users to adjust attack, release, and sustain knobs for a clipping effect.
Source -
Combining a Fruity Compressor with the Limiter can help manage loud peaks and balance the overall track volume, enhancing contrast between elements.
Source
User experience
-
Some users prefer the Fruity Limiter as a visual tool, despite not being impressed with its sound quality for vocal compression.
Source -
The Fruity Limiter is noted for its higher CPU usage compared to the Fruity Compressor, affecting computer performance during mixing.
Source -
Fruity Limiter is favored for subtle drum ducking due to its CPU efficiency compared to more intensive plugins like Trackspacer, often reserved for complex tasks.
Source
Use cases and applications
-
Some users create a consistent ducking signal using 3xosc instead of relying on a kick drum, allowing for precise control over the compressor's threshold and ratio.
Source -
Automation clips can provide more detailed control for sidechaining effects compared to using Fruity Limiter alone, allowing curve adjustments at key song moments.
Source -
It's commonly used by beginners to prevent clipping but can lead to a "pumpy" sound, as it consistently adjusts volume down to avoid peaks.
Source -
Some producers prefer using a soft clipper instead of a limiter on the master to avoid a "pumpy" effect while smoothing out waveform peaks.
Source
Comparisons
-
Trackspacer and Soothe2 offer mid/side support, allowing frequency-specific ducking that maintains stereo width, unlike Fruity Limiter's basic functionality.
Source -
Fruity Limiter is often replaced by Maximus or Fruity Soft Clipper for better sound quality and less "pumpy" audio on the master channel.

Great mastering tool
I don't think I ever made a song without the Fruity Limiter. It is an amazing, basic mastering tool, and also great for sidechaining

My primary compressor
Whenever I need to compress a track, I throw this on the master. I prefer using Maximus for individual elements of a track, but this is what I use when mastering the final track.

A decent enough compressor
I used to use it for all my compression. Now I just use it for sidechaining, and it works well for that.
