Drumcheck Sonor Phonic Plus Hitech Kit (IM Apr 86)

muzines.co.uk

While the Sonor Phonic Plus Hi-Tech Kit flaunts an eye-catching design and durable black hardware, it suffers from notable drawbacks. The kit's sound, though clear, may lack the warmth and depth some drummers crave, leading to a somewhat brittle tone. Additionally, the absence of internal dampers could leave players wanting for more control over resonance. Although the customizable configurations are a plus, the pricing can be steep, especially when considering additional accessories. Ultimately, while the Phonic Plus kit has its merits, it may not fully satisfy those seeking a rich, versatile sound.

At 15:25 in this interview, Rick Beato asks Danny Carey what drum kit he used on the first Tool record. Danny responds:

I had a Phonic Plus kit that I just bought off of a guy here in town. I can't even remember what it was. But it was a couple of 24" kick drums and they were all square size toms. Like, 12", 13", 14", 16" or something, you know. Those were my babies, you know. I still love the Phonic Plus drums, man. Beachwood sound, they just generate a lot of low end. Those bass drums actually, from that kit, I think I've used on every Tool recording. I have all these other kick drums I've had made. I get my endorsements from like Sonor signature series stuff that's insanely expensive but man I always end up going back to those drums. They're magical.
