Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Spector NS Legend 4 Classic Bass.

Features and functionality

  • The narrow neck design aids in faster playing, making it suitable for genres requiring quick finger movement like punk and classic rock.

    Source
  • The Custom's passive EMG HZ pickups deliver a treble-heavy tone with high mids, suitable for rock and metal, but may lack warmth for jazz.

    Source
  • Newer Legend models now come with Aguilar pickups instead of the previously used EMGs, offering a distinct tonal character.

    Source

User experience

  • The bass is prone to neck dive due to a heavy head, which can be mitigated by adjusting the strap points.

    Source
  • Owners note a deep bassy sound from Spectors generally, though the treble of the EMG HZ pickups in the Custom can be off-putting for some preferences.

    Source
  • Owners have reported that with proper setup, the Legend provides intonation and playability that can rival higher-end models.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Stock pickups produce a warm tone well-suited for classic rock, country, and punk, making it versatile across these styles.

    Source
  • While the Classic is praised for its solid build and tone, the Custom's sound may not suit jazz or softer genres without modifications.

    Source
  • The aggressive nature of the Tone Pump Jr preamp might suit metal players despite it being too intense for others.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer versions with EMG pickups for enhanced sound, though this remains a matter of personal taste.

    Source
  • The Legend Custom's set neck design and three-band EQ offer a more modern, detailed build compared to the bolt-on design of the Classic.

    Source
  • The Legend Classic's construction is often compared to the Euro line, particularly when older models with upgraded electronics are involved.

    Source

Build quality

  • It's noted that the Custom feels meticulously crafted with a visually appealing set neck, possibly indicating a higher attention to detail than the Classic.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • The Tone Pump Jr preamp in the Legend is considered too "hot" without an adjustment knob, unlike the full Tone Pump used in Euro models.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The Legend neck-thru models, now discontinued, are highly regarded and considered comparable to Euro line bolt-ons in terms of playability.

Almost perfect

The action is tight, the sound is great, the paint job is gorgeous (need to post a picture of mine) but it is missing something that even these sweet EMG SSD pickups can't deliver

My first Spector-- and certainly not my last!!

Slim neck, contoured body, nice electronics, great balance, incredible playability... This was the first Spector I ever played. Stellar basses (especially for the money). Mine has seen a lot of stage time. If you aren't too keen on the tone, they also make great mod basses. Pick one up sometime though... It will surprise you!
