Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about TASCAM DR-05XP Portable Handheld Recorder with Interface.

Features and functionality

  • The TASCAM DR-05XP offers more audio setting options than a phone, helping reduce background noise for cleaner recordings.

    Source
  • The TASCAM DR-05X uses an electronic attenuator with a minimum input gain sensitivity of 500mv, which can be too sensitive for typical line-level outputs.

    Source
  • The DR-05X allows input level adjustment during recording in 'limiter' mode, but not in 'peak reduction' or 'auto level' modes.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users find portable recorders like the TASCAM superior in quality to phone microphones, but note the convenience of always having a phone available.

    Source
  • Some users prefer the Sony PCM-M10 for its separate line-input jacks, which handle line-level signals more effectively than the TASCAM DR-05X.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The TASCAM DR-05XP is preferred in professional settings to avoid interruptions from phone calls or alarms during recordings.

    Source
  • When recording DJ sets, users may need to adjust the output signal from the mixer to align with the DR-05X's input sensitivity.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Some users wish portable recorders could Bluetooth samples directly to a phone for easier integration with apps like Koala.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend using an in-line attenuator, such as a -10db model, to manage signal levels when connecting to line-level outputs.

    Source
  • Hand-made attenuators, such as those found on eBay, help manage input levels and prevent clipping when recording from high-output sources.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • For optimal recording from a DJM-800 mixer, consider using a booth output with a 1/4" to 1/8" cable for independent level control.

Excellent Field Recorder

This compact unit records almost anything I want. I use it with binaural in-ear microphones usually, but have equally used it as a grab and point and hit record type of unit. It performs well and the XP has floating point resolution so it does not need to be set perfectly in order to get great material. This is a big advantage for me on this one over the previous versions.
