Critic Reviews

Boss Micro BR

soundonsound.com

The Boss Micro BR is a compact portable studio that impressively packs a punch. It's perfect for on-the-go musicians wanting to capture demos with ease, thanks to its quality effects and guitar amp modeling. The built-in rhythms and USB connectivity add to its charm. However, it requires a larger memory card to fully utilize its potential, and the lack of an included USB cable and optional PSU are minor setbacks. Overall, its portability and functionality make it a desirable tool for musicians, earning a strong recommendation despite these small drawbacks.

The Boss MICRO BR® Digital Recorder is a compact powerhouse, perfect for on-the-go recording with its myriad of features packed into a small unit. Its portability and versatility make it a handy tool for musicians, offering functionalities like a built-in mic, effects processor, and MP3 player. However, the cramped interface can be tricky for users unfamiliar with the manual, and its effect processor falls short compared to competitors. Battery consumption is high, and some MP3 files require re-encoding. Nevertheless, once you get past the learning curve, it effectively delivers quick recordings ready for MP3 export. A solid choice for those valuing mobility over advanced effects.

Boss Micro BR review | MusicRadar

The Boss MICRO BR® Digital Recorder is a pocket-sized powerhouse for guitarists, offering a 4-track recorder with built-in mic, amp simulations, and rhythms. Its portability and ease of use make it a solid choice for capturing musical ideas on the go. The effects for guitar are impressive, and features like the phrase trainer and tuner are handy for practice. However, it lacks some advanced effects, polished mastering capabilities, and doesn't include necessary accessories like a larger SD card, power adapter, or USB cable. Overall, it's a compact and effective tool for sketching out ideas and basic demos.

This is nearly perfect!

I love the size of the Micro BR, the length of time it can run on batteries, the intuitive user interface, and the quality of the effects and built-in drum patterns. I’m still using this device in 2023 - it’s outlasted many other “away from the studio” writing/recording solutions.

The only things I don’t love: - It’s an older device so it can only use a maximum 1Gb SD card - which are increasingly difficult to find. - it would be nice to have the ability to load my own drum patterns. - any digital multitrack would be perfect if it had a MIDI out so I could sync my synths or an external drum machine.

Still, the Micro BR serves its purpose well. I use it almost daily.

I also have the MICRO-BR. I’ve used that quite a bit for live recordings and recording my band live, just with a small mic to MP3. It’s wonderful, and I can record ideas quickly. There’s nothing worse than forgetting ideas. If I’m in the midst of writing, I don’t want to have to stop and write something down. I like to just record various ideas, and then I’ll go and organize them later.
