Owner Insights

Features and functionality

  • The DR-05X includes an overdubbing feature that is absent in the DR-05, offering more recording flexibility for musicians.

    Source
  • A significant update in the DR-05X is its ability to function as a class-compliant audio interface, adding versatility for studio and live recording setups.

    Source
  • The DR-05X supports a larger 128GB SDXC card, compared to the 32GB limit of the DR-05, providing extended recording time without swapping cards.

    Source
  • Tascam DR-05X can experience RF interference from cell phones, but issues often diminish at a distance of one to two feet.

    Source
  • The DR-05 has self-noise from built-in mics, noticeable in quiet recordings at high sensitivity; an external mic is recommended for cleaner audio.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The DR-05X firmware is not backward compatible with the DR-05, ensuring users need to stick to model-specific updates and features.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners have successfully mixed parts between DR-05 and DR-05X, indicating interchangeable analog and digital boards, which are useful for repairs and custom builds.

    Source
  • Owners have noted that interference from laptops or tablets is minimal, as Wi-Fi radios emit less RF energy compared to cell phones.

    Source
  • DR-05 mics are non-directional, picking up all surrounding sounds, which is beneficial for rehearsals but less ideal for solo instrument recording.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The DR-05X is appreciated for straightforward field recordings, such as capturing nature sounds, especially when paired with a wind blocker for windy conditions.

    Source
  • The Tascam DR-05X is praised for its sound quality at its price point, particularly for recording instruments like violins.

    Source
  • The DR-05 captures ambient room sounds effectively, but outside recordings require a windjammer, with aquarium filter floss as a budget alternative.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer the Zoom H1n for its ease of use and reliability, despite its 32GB memory limitation, which suffices for 44kHz 32-bit recordings up to 30 hours.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Tascam DR-05 MK1 is often cheaper than MK2; the only difference is a software upgrade, making the MK1 a cost-effective option.

Solid value

Not the most elaborate or expensive recorder, but it's easy to take with you and the field recordings sound pretty good. The mics are much more sensitive than I was expecting and it's easy to transfer audio files to a computer and use them in any way you want.

Very durable!!

Bought this specifically for its durability withing the price range. This is for those found-sound hunters who aren't afraid to climb a mountain and camp out in 35 degree weather, and want their field recorder to be able to do the same. First night I used it after purchasing, I dropped it out of a hoodie pocket onto hard asphalt. Not only was it perfectly ok (besides a little body scratch), it kept on recording throughout the jostle. Would highly recommend for those who want their gear to be as hardy as they are!!

Great!

I use it for filedrecordings and foley recordings. It's very easy to operate, comes wih everything you need and has a freaking lot funtions in it's firmware. The mics have a good quality.
