VHT Sig:X Amplifier Head Review | VHT Guitar Amplifiers

gear-vault.com

The VHT Sig:X amplifier head delivers an impressive range of tones, seamlessly transitioning between clean, rhythm, and lead channels while boasting a staggering array of control options. Its innovative Power Shift and Enhance Mode technologies provide players with exceptional flexibility and responsiveness, making it adaptable for various music styles. However, the overwhelming number of knobs and switches may intimidate less experienced users. While it excels in performance, the complexity and learning curve might deter some. Overall, the Sig:X is a powerful tool for tone chasers, but it demands dedication to master its full potential.

Didn’t expect it to be so good.

In my quest for a legendary old VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead with KT88 power tubes, I started looking at alternatives. One of these is the Sig:X. An Ultra Lead is known for its dry and unforgiving tone. Not many amps sound and feel like that. I didn’t expect to find it in the Sig:X in such quantities too! Where the Ultra Lead is extremely good at one thing (albeit capable of many different tones), the Sig:X is even more versatile. It has even more tonal options and switches all over the panel. Initially they intimidate and confuse. But when taking a bit of time experimenting and dialling in the amp, they all make perfect sense. They all do something to the tone that is clearly audible. If you (like me) want to know what you‘re actually doing, the manual explains it very well. It’s also easy to dial in to your tastes (much more than an UL). This amp can do crystal sparkling cleans, nice crunch, strong rythm parts and searing leads. Three channels. A boost*. And a happy guitarist.

  • no it doesn’t need a tube screamer. It already HAS a boost!

Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier 150W Solo Head (Multi-Watt)

$2,999.00 - $3,566.64

cheaper alternative

Sig:X is a dry and unforgiving high gain amp. The Triple Rectifier is much „fatter“ or richer in it‘s approach and masks small mistakes a lot better.

VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead

Vintage or Discontinued similar sound

Similarities: both have a KT88 power section. Both have a particularly dry and unforgiving quality to it (makes you a better player!). Their gain also behaves differently in power chords vs high note leads. Can’t think of any other amp that does this. Differences: Sig:X is easier to dial in and can do a lot more tones similar to other amps than the Ultra Lead. Crunchy Marshally tones, thick Mesa tones (the dryness does remain present) etc.
