Features and functionality

  • The scalloped frets are only under the top two strings and on the top five frets, allowing for easier bends by reducing friction.

    Source
  • The bass includes two outputs, enabling each pickup to be sent to separate amplifiers, with a tone knob function allowing both to operate on one output.

    Source
  • The Yamaha Attitude bass uniquely combines a P bass pickup with a Hofner/mudbucker-style pickup, delivering versatile tones essential for modern music.

Setup and maintenance

  • The neck is considered bulky and can make the instrument neck-heavy, a result of the oversized headstock requested by Billy Sheehan.

    Source
  • A pro setup is critical; many new instruments aren't well set up, affecting playability and comfort.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The neck is significantly larger than a P bass neck but still reportedly comfortable, with some players noting its similarity to the thick Jazz bass neck.

    Source
  • Some players find the Yamaha string spacing awkward, comparing it to fitting four strings where others fit five.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The price, around $3400, reflects a high level of custom build quality, which some find prohibitive despite their interest in the instrument.

    Source
  • Despite the premium pricing, some find Yamaha's routing for specific pickup combinations cost-effective compared to custom modifications.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners with smaller hands, or those preferring slimmer necks, find the size challenging, likening it to a hindrance for playing comfort.

    Source
  • Ergonomics matter; a poorly balanced bass can lead to discomfort, emphasizing the importance of trying it standing with a strap.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend replacing the stock pickups with Fender American noiseless J-bass pickups for enhanced tone and reduced interference.

Billy Sheehan of The Winery Dogs and Mr. Big fame had this Yamaha Attitude Double Neck made for his 2001 tour with Steve Vai and later brought it back to the stage for his 2009 Budokan tour anb on the Mr. Big "Hey Man" tour.

Quote:

"It's upper neck is tuned B E A D like the Ultra Bass and was the original trial version of that tuning on a standard neck for me. The second or lower neck is tuned standard (EADG). It has a toggle switch to choose either or both necks. Since my basses have 2 outputs, I need 2 wireless units to transmit my signal in a live performance. Adding that onto this already extra heavy bass made it weigh about 20 pounds! It still was well balanced, played easily, and sounded great live." - Billy Sheehan
