Good starter bass

tl;dr: Picked it up once but still would recommend as a starter bass. I did not own one myself but rather tried one from a friend.

It looks ugly and cheap (the shape and hardware that is, the red paint is actually pretty nice) However, it is (in typical Yamaha tradition) sturdy and frankly built. The sound palette is not incredibly large, you get a neutral yet slightly gnarly timbre. However, the 2 volume 1 tone control panel makes it really easy to dial in a certain tones.

The shape of the neck feels really nice (dare I say fast ?). You also get 24 frets, which is always welcome even if overkill on such a bass. I got a bit of fret buzz, but nothing major, it was the bridge. I always got a bit of fret buzz on Yamaha (both guitar and basses) but it was often because of the bridge which needed a quick, easy set-up.
