Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about ZL Audio Equalizer.

Features and functionality

  • The dynamic EQ in the ZL Equalizer is praised for its natural and transparent output, with sidechain and mid/side band capabilities being particularly useful.

    Source
  • The ZL Audio Equalizer includes more dynamics controls than Pro-Q3, offering threshold, attack, release, and knee settings, although lacking automatic, program-dependent thresholds.

    Source
  • Unlike Pro-Q3, the ZL Audio Equalizer does not include natural or linear phase modes, which may affect specific sound processing preferences.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The "BREAKING CHANGES" label indicates updates that modify the DSP algorithm, potentially altering outputs from previous versions, suggesting users back up projects before upgrading.

    Source
  • The plugin experiences crashes if the C++ runtime isn't updated, highlighting a potential setup issue when integrating into digital audio workstations (DAWs).

    Source
  • Being open source, users can back up the plugin’s source code and binaries, ensuring future compatibility through potential recompilation if necessary.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Considered a great free alternative to Pro-Q4, though lacking the spectral processing feature that enables more transparent track unmasking.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Many users find this EQ especially effective for transparent and natural sound adjustments, comparable to more premium options for dynamic EQ tasks.

    Source
  • Notably absent is AAX support, limiting its use in Pro Tools, though it functions in DAWs supporting VST like Logic and Reaper.

    Source

User experience

  • Users have reported no crashes post-update, but the interface's icons are not intuitive, necessitating thorough reading of the instructions for effective use.

ZL Equalizer 2 is a new FREE alternative to FabFilter Pro-Q - Bedroom Producers Blog

bedroomproducersblog.com

ZL Equalizer 2 hits all the right notes as a free alternative to the pricey FabFilter Pro-Q. Sporting a sleek, modern interface, it's packed with features like 24 bands, dynamic EQ per band, and high-quality 64-bit float processing. Its user-friendly design means no sign-ups or log-ins, making it an easy download from GitHub. While it doesn't completely rival Pro-Q, it offers a close experience, particularly for those on a budget. However, it's not without its glitches—some users report installation bugs and compatibility issues. Despite this, ZL Equalizer 2 stands out as one of the most robust free EQs available today, especially for those willing to navigate a few quirks.

My fav. Can't believe it's free. LINUX!!!

I have both the 1st and 2nd versions of this. I prefer the 1st because the eq shapes are labeled. In the 2nd version they use symbols instead. I love this for acoustic guitar because in only 1 instance, you can add 4 eq moves and 2 or 3 dynamic eq moves as well. Awesome! So easy to use and understand. Also you can see the waveform in realtime which is very helpful. Can't mix without it! Works on Linux and Reaper!
