Description

For those seeking to blend vintage charm with modern versatility, the Waves API 550A + API 550B EQ plugin suite delivers an unparalleled audio sculpting experience. Inspired by the legendary 1960s API consoles, these plugins encapsulate the "Proportional Q" technology, which adjusts the bandwidth depending on the amplitude setting, ensuring precise control over your mix. The API 550A, a 3-band equalizer, is known for its ability to create a smooth, musical response, ideal for both corrective and creative EQ tasks. Meanwhile, the API 550B extends your tonal palette with four overlapping bands and 7 switchable filter frequencies, offering the sweet analog warmth that API is celebrated for.

Both plugins promise high headroom, maintaining clarity even under extreme settings. Whether you're polishing vocals, refining instruments, or crafting entirely new sounds, this suite empowers producers and musicians with a wide range of tonal possibilities. These EQs are a staple in professional studios and promise the same high-fidelity sound in your digital workstation.

Key Features:

  • Includes both API 550A 3-Band and API 550B 4-Band equalizers
  • "Proportional Q" technology widens/narrows bandwidth based on gain settings
  • API 550A offers selectable peaking/shelving on high and low frequencies
  • API 550B features 7 switchable frequency centers per band
  • High headroom with +30 dB clip level for pristine sound quality
  • Ideal for both corrective and creative EQ tasks

Critic Reviews

Waves API Collection

soundonsound.com

Waves' API Collection delivers a compelling suite of EQ and compressor plugins, faithfully capturing the character of API's revered hardware. The EQs inject a warm, punchy sound, while the 2500 compressor stands out for its versatility and nuanced control, making it a standout for mix compression. Although the interface could be more user-friendly, particularly with the dual-concentric controls, Waves provides a polished digital experience with its intuitive design. The price tag is hefty, but for those seeking quality emulations of classic gear, the investment may be justified. Overall, a robust collection for those ready to pay for authenticity.

Very close to the real thing

I've owned this plugin for roughly 3 years, and use it on every mix. I recently purchased a hardware 550b and can confidently say that Waves has gotten very close. Demo it, use it, and see why everybody goes crazy over these things!
