Goddamn I've been looking for one of these with a rosewood fretboard and a decent finish for a long time.
But those pickups...
I bet I can rip those out and put a Seymour Jazz Set...
11yalmost 11 years ago
but that's a genuinely old guitar with water damage and finish checking, not a fake
And God I wish people sold stuff like that on eBay and Craiglist :'(
11yalmost 11 years ago
when you go that far its almost like a 'burnt/raw finish'
Raw does not even scratch the surface!
11yalmost 11 years ago
Is it really? I think there was something about the neck too, but I couldn't remember for the life of me. All I remember is that those strats and teles feel okay, bu the Jazzmaster just seemed to just sit right with me. I even tried the older ones on the vintage room at Guitar Centre and they felt just as good.
Then again, Gibson and the tens of other third-parties likes Hagstrom and D'Angelico are still on mind. Depends on how much money I can get in the next few months. I want to really open my options soon enough.

would I intentionally fuck a guitar up
Personally, with a blowtorch, yes. Just look at Steve Vai's "burnt" Jem. Very nice.
let some dude put fake play wear on my new guitar?
The only custom job I have ever liked is the custom Road Worn Jazzmaster by Fender for its subtlety. However, a good relic looks like a guitar that survived a flood. I like the idea of something that's been stripped to the core, yet still unleashing some killer blues solos.

Got my heart set on a Jazzmaster, no doubt. But I had a few ideas going around while college holds me back.

This is one of them. Fact is, the guitar both feels and sounds fantastic. But who is to say that a pair of humbuckers won''t make it sound better?

Small practice amp on a budget
In case you want to spend $230 on verified tone. It's used, though, retail, that little beast is $320. Ouch, felt that one smack my wallet.

So I have an old Aria Pro II guitar that I don't use very often. I do however love the idea of relicing a guitar; either that or just screwing it up so bad yet making it look better.
So, I just realised my dad has an old blowtorch. I think you know what will happen soon.
I was wondering though, what do you guys know and think about relicing a guitar? Because personally, when I find a good relic guitar, I don't understand how people feel so disrespected.

Small practice amp on a budget
"The perfect combination of innovation and tradition, the VOX Valvetronix + Series combines sophisticated modeling technology with vintage know-how to provide an array of authentic guitar tones that are worthy of the name VOX. Based on the acclaimed VOX Valve Reactor circuit, which utilizes a genuine 12AX7 vacuum tube in the power stage, these advanced digital amplifiers retain the familiar warmth of a genuine tube amp. True tube tone is pumped through a custom designed 8” VOX speaker, while the intuitive control set makes customizing the VT20+ to your liking simple."
-VOX Amplification LTD.
Some kind of hybrid of digital amplification and some tube technology as well as modelling tech. Not bad, Go try it out. If it sounds as good as it does on YouTube, expect a good tone as well as the option of different effects and such.

Small practice amp on a budget
Nice choice! Again, if you haven't already made your purchase, I suggest you buy it on eBay for less and see if you can get both head and speaker for less.

I'd go for the telecaster. It might just be me, but I hate SG (And basically most Gibson) necks. For me It's Gibson or nothing in terms of Les Pauls. Fender is definitely the way forward: If I had £5-900 pounds to spend on a guitar I'd be getting a fender.
I assume you read the five pages of text to come to that conclusion?

Item should be renamed to "JHS Double Barrel 2-in-1 Dual Overdrive Pedal".
Also, it needs to be categorised under "Effects".

33 famous guitarists, their first guitars, and how they learned
First Guitar: Some old Aria Pro II recovered from a church that our congregation moved to. That, and my sister's Yamaha FX acoustic.
How I Learned: Self-taught for the most part, but I started taking informal lessons and now taking college classes. I'm finally learning theory :D
First Song: Probably the introduction to "One" by Metallica. I could never get past the first repeated verses, and I hated the solo. Probably should try again.

Questions About Octave Shifting
Would an octave pedal work with an electric violin? Would it work or would it just completely mess up the tone?
I must know if this works! Always wanted to learn violin, still do.

Small practice amp on a budget
I love the band Foals and it's so cool that Jimmy Smith uses the Fender Mustang as a practice amp in the dressing room :)
Damn, haven't heard of'em and they sound really good.
EDIT: Oh, guys, try Masakachi! It was on Foals' Instathing and they sound fantastic!

Small practice amp on a budget
If this thread is still somewhat active and OP is still considering, I'd go with the Mustang. The Micro Terror may have better tone, but I think it would be better if you start to familiarise yourself with more and more effects WITHOUT buying pedals. You might find a few effects you like and take note for future purchases!
Micro Terror... for your tastes, it would very well. Tone simply outweighs lacks of effects too, but this is more your opinion. Do you want better tone, or more effects?
Also, if you go with the Micro Terror, try the used ones on eBay or Craigslist. They're much cheaper, and if they do break down, it'll give you an opportunity to learn how a tube amp works and how to fix it rather than just sending it to the luthier. In fact, talk to him for help if it does break down!

Yes! I have a friend who's new to guitar and is constantly using that annoying GuitarTuna app. I would love to win this and get her a better tuner.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!
Another thing, noticed how for band pages, it looks like there is a way of adding a photo for the entire band, but normal users can't do that. Probably should change that.

Items that aren't products (e.g., body parts) are not acceptable submissions
Right hand thing was funny, but I didn't know people were using it...
On account of computers, my 2 cents is that a computer itself is OK, I guess there might be some importance to it, but accessories such as keyboards and mice are irrelevant unless they pose some sort of use that is important. I can't think of an example, though.
If we're actually going to start deleting all the crap submissions, I suggest you guys start here!

There's a really cool ambient reverb pedal made by digitech. I put the link below, it's worth having especially if you're into having different effects for your guitar
http://digitech.com/en/products/supernatural As a user of this pedal, I highly recommend this pedal. However, It's pretty dramatic compared to most others.

How does a compressor clean a dirty signal?
I was re-watching a Rig Rundown with Paul Gilbert when I noticed something I hadn't paid attention to: after his distorted signal splits, it hits one end with a compressor that makes his tone really clean, as if there were no distortion to begin with.
How does that even happen? How can that be done?

How do I get better from here?
Josh's episode was the best, but he makes up his own scale from pieces of the Blues, I think? I didn't see the whole thing, but I read an article on it some time ago. Quite ingenious of Josh to create a new scale.

To help you out, you should probably tell us what your price range is and what kind of music your playing is, and, if possible, what gear you use.
To start with, I recommend the TC Electronic Hall of Fame reverb pedal. Retail, it's $160, but you can find it cheaper on places like Reverb.com, Craigslist, or eBay. It's got a great set of settings and lots of control. If you want something cheaper and simpler, there's the Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail or even the Boss RV-5. Super simple reverb pedals are usually general use reverb for all situations. That would be mini versions of popular reverbs such as the TC Electronic HOF Mini.
You can find an article here: http://equipboard.com/posts/best-reverb-pedals
The Hall of Fame is #1 on EquipBoard's list of best reverbs.

Active guitar pickups
Every guitar design that came after 1990
I'm a bit stumped on these. What's your beef against active pickups and guitars after 1990?
Also, my comments aren't being posted. My reply to JimMarchi1:
Barring a normal open D chord is unacceptable, but barring an open D to reach other notes is, and I failed to mention that.

I HAD to take some Latin every year in jr high, it was part of the program I was in (just like I had to study logic, taxonomy, ontology, etc to stay in gifted class in primary school) so it barely crossed my mind at the time that it was a weird thing to do.
HA, our public schools don't even bother with such things as "taxonomy" or "logic". If they did, maybe our new workforce might have some better skills, eh?
Who has the time to learn another 'dead' language?
All the time in the world.
11yalmost 11 years ago
Shame, I know no Latin, but I did just purchase a copy of the book.I just got past the first chapter, trying to get myself into these types of books, I'm even writing notes.
Still, why learn Latin? Isn't that a dead language? I couldn't possibly get much out of a Latin book if the language is dead.

Musicians who barre in unnecessary situations.
No, you do not barre an open D chord. Stop it.
You see that power chord? It requires three fingers. Stop barring the 5th and octave.
E inversion to high up the board? Practise. BUT DON'T BARRE THE BLOODY CHORD
