Visual Sound was founded by Bob Weil, who began building guitar pedals after purchasing an Ernie Ball volume pedal in 1988 and finding it lacked a visual indicator for position. Self-taught in electronics and engineering, Weil patented the concept and debuted his first product, the Visual Volume pedal — featuring an LED scale — at the January 1995 NAMM show. Based in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the company went on to pioneer the dual-effect stompbox format with the Jekyll & Hyde, which combined overdrive and distortion in a single enclosure and became one of the most widely used pedals of its kind.
Visual Sound expanded its lineup to include the Route 66 (overdrive/compressor), the H2O (chorus/echo), and the 1 SPOT, a compact pedalboard power supply that became ubiquitous on pedalboards worldwide. The company also developed the Pure Tone buffer circuit. In 2015, Visual Sound rebranded as Truetone, a name the company had trademarked years earlier and used on a clean boost pedal as far back as 2008. Under the Truetone name, the company continues to produce updated V3 versions of its classic pedals alongside the 1 SPOT Pro power supply line. Notable players associated with the brand include Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes.
Visual Sound has 33 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Overdrive Effects Pedals, Multi Effects Pedals, and Delay Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 104 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Folk, World, & Country. Notable users include Jimmy Vivino, Nick Valensi, and Albert Hammond Jr. Visual Sound's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
