Description

The PG-300 MIDI Guitar by Casio

The Casio PG-300 MIDI Guitar is a rare hybrid instrument that combines a traditional electric guitar with an onboard MIDI synthesizer system. Built in Japan (often by FujiGen), it features a Strat-style design with standard magnetic pickups alongside a hexaphonic MIDI pickup for triggering synth sounds. The guitar includes an internal sound engine capable of producing a wide range of tones such as bass, organ, and sax, which can be blended with the regular guitar signal. It can also output MIDI data to control external synthesizers or recording equipment, making it highly versatile for studio and experimental use. Power is supplied via battery or adapter, allowing it to function as a self-contained synth guitar. Due to its unique design and limited production, it is considered a collectible among vintage gear enthusiasts.

Specs:

• Body Type: Solid body (Strat-style design)
• Neck: Maple neck (typical configuration)
• Pickups: Standard single-coil pickups + hex MIDI pickup
• Synth Engine: Built-in digital sound generator (dozens to hundreds of tones depending on cards)
• Sound Cards: Supports external ROM cards (e.g., RC-100, RC-140)
• Outputs: Standard guitar output + MIDI output + mix output options
• Controls: Ability to switch between guitar, synth, or blended sounds
• Power Supply: 9V battery or external adapter
• Manufacturing: Made in Japan

The Casio PG-300 MIDI guitar is a curious blend of innovative technology and tricky practicality. While it dazzles with its onboard synth sounds and ease of use for the MIDI-savvy, it falls short in the craftsmanship department, with buzzing bass strings and an inconvenient truss rod adjustment. Its versatility is undeniable, offering a wide array of preset sounds that can be mixed with the standard guitar output. However, the variety of sounds is hit-or-miss, with some being useful and others, like 'Teardrops' and 'Cowbells,' bordering on the absurd. The PG-300 is an intriguing entry into the world of MIDI guitars, but its steep price and mixed sound palette make it a niche choice rather than a must-have.
