PROS

  • Combines attributes of both Strats and PRS Tremonti, offering versatility and familiar feel

  • Maple neck and split coil option enhance brightness and tonal versatility

  • Humbucker delivers clear, full-bodied sound with high output

  • Excellent fit and finish; attention to detail is top-notch

  • Bolt-on neck offers a punchy, percussive attack

  • Coil splitting provides diverse sound range, excelling in single coil settings

  • Reliable tuning stability with PRS trem and locking tuners

  • Ideal for multiple genres – from reggae to rock

  • High-end pickups with dynamic balance and clarity

CONS

  • 85/15 pickups can be dark and lack clarity in high gain settings

  • Some find the bridge pickup lacks chuggy/punchy tone for heavy styles

  • Noticeable volume drop in coil split mode without a boost pedal

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about PRS CE 24.

Setup and maintenance

  • Installing a PRS Core nut can resolve tuning stability issues caused by string binding at the nut, especially with heavier gauge strings.

    Source
  • Floating tremolo bridges take longer to stabilize tuning after restringing, but adjusting the spring claw can stop the tremolo from floating for more stability.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The PRS SE CE 24's tremolo system is more stable than an Affinity Strat’s, though it may not match a hardtail's stability.

    Source
  • The CE 24-08 offers more pickup configurations, such as combining the bridge humbucker with a split coiled neck pickup.

    Source
  • The 85/15 LT pickups are highlighted for their versatility, with coil tapping available on both pickups in certain special editions.

    Source

User experience

  • The guitar’s neck profile, radius, and scale length offer a unique feel, different from both Les Paul and Stratocaster.

    Source
  • Some players feel the PRS CE 24 doesn't offer a significant improvement in feel over older guitars, despite its modern design and features.

    Source

Comparisons

  • PRS SE CE 24 sits tonally between a Les Paul and Stratocaster, convincing in both styles without sounding identical.

    Source
  • The CE 24 is described as a "snappier, brighter Custom 24" with more warmth than a Strat or Tele, but not as fat as a Les Paul.

    Source
  • The CE 24 is noted to have hotter pickups than a Strat, achieving Strat-like tones when the volume is rolled off.

    Source
  • Owners who previously played a Fender Strat report the PRS CE 24's neck feels thicker, affecting playability for those accustomed to thinner neck profiles.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using nut files can help maintain tuning stability by reducing string friction at the nut.

    Source
  • Solar Guitars stock pickups are modeled after Seymour Duncans, offering an alternative for those seeking a different tonal palette without aftermarket modifications.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Semi-hollow CE 24 models are preferred by some for metal, contrary to typical expectations.

    Source
  • Medium output pickups in the CE 24 may not satisfy metal players seeking high-output pickups for a more aggressive chugging tone.

    Source

Build quality

  • Black limba wood is primarily a cosmetic choice, with negligible tonal differences noted compared to traditional mahogany/maple builds.

Critic Reviews

Review – PRS CE 24 | The Budget Guitarist

budgetguitarist.com

The PRS CE 24 impresses with its stunning looks and stellar sound, reminiscent of a sleek, hot-rodded Les Paul. However, it's not a budget option, with prices starting at $2,300. The thin, fast neck is a highlight, perfect for those who value speed, yet the body carve with its pronounced lip might cause discomfort for some players. While it offers an American-made quality with genuine PRS pickups, the guitar's bolt-on neck might lack the full-bodied richness found in heavier models like the Gibson Les Paul. Ultimately, the CE 24 is a remarkable guitar but may not suit everyone’s taste or comfort.

Excellent Playability and Versatile Tone

"I’ve been playing the PRS CE 24 for several months, and it delivers a very smooth neck, comfortable body, and versatile tone suitable for a wide range of styles. The build quality is excellent, and it stays in tune well. Highly recommended for both studio and live use.

abysswalker

It is comfortable, very well made and sounds unbelievable

I really cant complain about anything. Its perfect how it is. I dont like to modify my instruments if I don't need to, and this is perfect at stock.

A versatile perfectly playing beauty

I own a 2008 model with amber finish. Mahogany body with flamed maple top, bolt on one piece maple neck with rosewood fretboard, abalone dot markers, 24 frets. Vintage Bass and HFS pickups with 1 volume and 1 coil split push pull tone pot, 3 way toggle switch and PRS trem. This guitar plays like a dream and has the lowest action of all of my guitars. In humbucker mode, the front pickup delivers vintage humbucker sounds which are a bit less warm than a Gibson Les Paul or SG. The middle position has a great fat strat-like sound, and the bridge pickup has a great aggressive, yet musical, rock sound. There is a considerable volume drop in coil split mode, and the front and middle PU coil splits sound a bit thin and lack a bit of character compared to the humbuckers when the same amp settings are used. I found that this can be compensated for by using a high quality boost or overdrive pedal, e.g the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe, when in coil split mode. The split HFS bridge pickup sounds great though, a bit like a P90. The PRS trem in combination with the locking tuners works perfectly. Overall, this is the ultimate Powerstrat for me, and a stunningly beautiful guitar as well.

Flawless guitar

This is a perfectly built guitar, but I'm not a fan of the 85/15 pickups. They are very dark, and don't sound very good for higher gain applications. They do sound incredible for blues though.

Legendary tool

I played it in the studio and I was just in shock, someday I will get this handsome man

franz_komsan_vor

Great Modern Sound!!!

Love the maple neck. light weigh with brighter sound. It seem like sustain is kinda drop due to neck joint.

jimmarchi1

nah, fool with the set-up until its less plunky... if that doesn't help, look at the trem system, you may want to adjust how it floats (or doesn't float depending on your preference) being an import it may have a crappy zinc sustain block anchoring the strings and you may want to try an aftermarket replacement made from cold rolled steel or bell brass to better focus the vibration of the strings back into the body and pickups... in my experience any passably made guitar can be made to sustain like a champ with some tinkering
