Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gretsch New Classic Maple.

Use cases and applications

  • The bop size configuration (12" tom, 14" floor tom, 18" kick) is favored for jazz, but also excels in 70s/80s R&B and rock when tuned low.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 18" kick drum is praised for its punch, attributed to its 30-degree bearing edges and die-cast hoops, providing a warm, vintage sound.

    Source
  • The snare is praised for its versatility, where an open and ringy tone can be achieved with a coated ambassador head, while a drier sound is possible with a Coated Controlled Sound head.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to the Gretsch Renown, the New Classic offers a superior sound, likely due to the inclusion of gum wood in the shell mix, which mellows the tone.

    Source
  • While not the favorite finish choice, the drum's sound quality and price make it a worthwhile acquisition despite personal aesthetic preferences.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report the New Classic kit records exceptionally well, making it a reliable choice for studio sessions.

    Source
  • Some owners favor the natural satin finish over wraps for its aesthetic appeal, preferring visible wood grain over external coverings.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The specific choice of Remo and Evans heads across the kit is highlighted for achieving the desired sound and recording quality, such as Evans Genera Dry on the snare for controlled overtones.

    Source
  • For heavy rock, players recommend experimenting with dampened or controlled snare heads, suggesting a move from coated ambassadors to heads like Remo's Controlled Sound for reduced overtones.

    Source

Build quality

  • The New Classic Maple snare features stock die-cast hoops, enhancing its projection and providing a robust, consistent tuning stability.

Gretsch New Classic Kit review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Gretsch New Classic Maple kit successfully blends retro aesthetics with the iconic Gretsch sound, offering impressive build quality at a competitive price. The innovative features, like the Integrated Tension Lug Suspension System, enhance playability, while the variety in shell thicknesses delivers a rich tonal depth. However, the limited finish options and some aesthetic inconsistencies might deter certain buyers looking for a more polished look. Overall, this kit provides a fantastic alternative for drummers seeking professional quality without the premium price tag.

Oh, yea. I'll go to great lengths to get Gretsch drums wherever I am. Drum Paradise has Gretsch in Nashville, as does Artie Smith in New York. I have Gretsch drums in Tokyo, as well as a kit in Europe. I'm using all Gretsch with Herbie, the New Classic Maple with tube lugs. They sound different from the classic USA Maple. They're the first new Gretsch drum design in many years and they sound great. Recently on tour with Jeff Beck I used my own Signature series, and I'll use those in Japan with Herbie.
