Features and functionality
-
The 18" kick drum is praised for its punch, attributed to its 30-degree bearing edges and die-cast hoops, providing a warm, vintage sound.
Source -
The snare is praised for its versatility, where an open and ringy tone can be achieved with a coated ambassador head, while a drier sound is possible with a Coated Controlled Sound head.

Comparisons
-
Compared to the Gretsch Renown, the New Classic offers a superior sound, likely due to the inclusion of gum wood in the shell mix, which mellows the tone.
Source -
While not the favorite finish choice, the drum's sound quality and price make it a worthwhile acquisition despite personal aesthetic preferences.

Setup and maintenance
-
The specific choice of Remo and Evans heads across the kit is highlighted for achieving the desired sound and recording quality, such as Evans Genera Dry on the snare for controlled overtones.
Source -
For heavy rock, players recommend experimenting with dampened or controlled snare heads, suggesting a move from coated ambassadors to heads like Remo's Controlled Sound for reduced overtones.

Mentioned in this 2007 Modern Drummer interview, archived on Colaiuta's official website.
Oh, yea. I'll go to great lengths to get Gretsch drums wherever I am. Drum Paradise has Gretsch in Nashville, as does Artie Smith in New York. I have Gretsch drums in Tokyo, as well as a kit in Europe. I'm using all Gretsch with Herbie, the New Classic Maple with tube lugs. They sound different from the classic USA Maple. They're the first new Gretsch drum design in many years and they sound great. Recently on tour with Jeff Beck I used my own Signature series, and I'll use those in Japan with Herbie.
