Description

Introducing the Korg Volca FM, a new age synthesizer that brings the classic and contemporary together. As part of the renowned Volca series, this three-voice digital FM synthesizer effortlessly reproduces the sound engine of a classic FM synthesizer, while offering full compatibility with it. Whether you're an FM synthesis expert or not, the Volca FM's unique interface allows you to easily manipulate distinctive FM sounds.

With the 16-step sequencer, one of Volca's signature features, you get access to new functionalities such as WARP ACTIVE STEP and PATTERN CHAIN, empowering you to create even more dynamic rhythm patterns. The Volca FM harks back to the golden era of synthesizers with its FM (Frequency Modulation) sound generation, delivering metallic and sharp sounds reminiscent of electric piano and synth bass, adored by musicians since the 1980s.

The loop sequencer allows up to 16 steps, letting you record your performance on the touch panel keyboard as you play. The motion sequence function records your knob movements, allowing you to add time-varying changes to the sound, perfect for refining your loops and generating original live performances.

Critic Reviews

Korg Volca FM

soundonsound.com

Korg's Volca FM is a pocket-sized powerhouse, cramming the iconic DX7's FM synthesis into a user-friendly, portable format. It impressively accepts DX7 patch dumps, making it a gateway to a treasure trove of classic sounds. With features like a built-in chorus, step sequencer, and three-note polyphony, it brings a fresh take on FM synthesis. However, it misses MIDI velocity and Program Change messages, and lacks a MIDI Out, which could limit some users. Despite these setbacks, it offers immense value for its price, making FM synthesis accessible and fun for a new generation.

Korg Volca FM Synthesizer review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Korg Volca FM is hailed as a standout in the Volca series, delivering powerful, creative FM synthesis reminiscent of the iconic Yamaha DX7. Its compact design and affordability make it appealing, while features like fantastic motion sequencing and ease of use for FM synthesis settings elevate it above its peers. However, its limited polyphony, reducing the DX7's 16 voices to just three, may deter those seeking lush, complex pads. Despite the small screen and limited sound editing capabilities, the Volca FM offers rich, unique sounds, making it a worthwhile addition for studio use at an attractive price.

Korg Volca FM Review

musictech.com

Korg's Volca FM impresses with its user-friendly take on FM synthesis, making it accessible for both newcomers and seasoned sound designers. The compact and sturdy unit offers an extensive feature set, including a versatile motion sequencer and compatibility with classic DX7 patches, expanding its sonic palette significantly. While it suffers from small controls and an underwhelming onboard speaker, these drawbacks are overshadowed by its creative potential and affordability. The Volca FM stands out as a top choice in the Volca series, effectively shifting the focus from analogue to FM synthesis, providing exceptional value for money.

Sounds Amazing, Midi is In only

Great, and powerful FM engine. But, it can't be used to control other devices via midi.

It's sync can be used in Modular setups very easily, which is a huge bonus.

dianagiovanni

Seems so amazing!!!!

blackfan

Little power box.

I got this on a bit of a whim after years of perusing the right vintage FM for my needs. It has outweighed my expectations.

muninn

bizarre, weird sound

i've bought it just to do some bizarre sounds and then.. it became one of my lead machine! really minimal, but HUGE sound. and i don't know how, it really can do amazing bass frequencies

jaydontplay

Small package, big DX7 sounds

Very small and portable, fun to take around and play with. Also great for performances, and adding it to your other synths for song recording.

worth buying even thouh I own a vintage DX7 mk2?

jaydontplay

If you own a DX7 I don't know much of a reason to buy this, although it might be fun to travel around with and practice when you can't carry the DX7. Alternatively you could use it to layer more DX7 style sounds on top of your DX7.

jimmarchi1

actually the DX7 IIFD? its a beast.... way big and heavy, not fun to lug around nor is it something I keep out on a stand all the time as mucha s I happen to love it... I was kinda interested in the tweakability of this little guy, you can't change parameters while playing on a DX.... and the smallness, yes

vallimheitor

Surreal.

Som em FM, com aquela pegada dos anos 80 podendo viajar na brincadeira e nos timbres.

My new studio is finally set up. I wanted a studio that didn’t feel too clinical or sterile; a place that I can feel comfortable and relaxed when writing music. That meant lots of light and plants.
