Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Leslie Model 145 Speaker Cabinet.

Features and functionality

  • The 145 is a shorter, more mobile version of the 147, sharing the same amplifier but with less bass response due to its smaller cabinet size.

    Source
  • The "145/7" label is typically manually typed and suggests interchangeability of parts between 145 and 147 models.

    Source
  • Identical amps for 145 and 147 mean parts can be swapped without affecting performance, aside from cabinet size differences.

    Source
  • The Leslie 145 is favored for its compatibility with a wide range of instruments due to its 6-pin input design, unlike the 122 with a different power arrangement.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The 145 provides a brighter tone compared to the warmer sound of the 122, which pairs well with Hammond tonewheel organs due to its balanced line input.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • A 147 amp can be modified by adding a second 12AU7A tube to incorporate a 122-style balanced line input while retaining its brighter sound.

    Source
  • Increasing the Leslie amp capacitors from 200uf/50vdc to 1000uf/50vdc is a suggested performance enhancement.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • For players using clone keyboards like the Nord Stage 2 or Roland VK8, a Trek2 preamp pedal is recommended for compatibility with Leslie cabinets.

    Source

User experience

  • Leslie cabinets often have panels removed for enhanced sound projection and visual enjoyment of the rotor mechanisms during performances.

    Source
  • Owners mention that the amp inside a 145 often has markings indicating it can be used in either a 145 or 147 cabinet.

    Source

Build quality

  • Euro versions from Hammond UK often have metallic stickers indicating mid to late '70s production with potential chipboard construction instead of hardwood.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The Leslie 145 utilizes a 6-pin Wurlitzer-style input, making it versatile for non-Hammond applications when paired with a combo preamp pedal.

    Source
  • It's crucial to keep the Leslie 145 upright during transport to prevent motor spindle misalignment and potential burnout.

    Source
  • For moving the Leslie 145, ensure the A-100 organ and Leslie remain upright to avoid oil spillage and motor issues.

    Source
  • A spring reverb unit in the A-100 needs careful handling; foam can be used to stabilize springs during transport.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • A functional Leslie 145 is valued at over $800, making it a worthwhile investment if operational.

Friends help, and I’ve done some stupid stuff, like plug my Hammond B3 into the 145 Leslie which I have to play with the keyboard. They’re not compatible, so I blew the Leslie up and almost blew myself up. I try things, and I ask people and read my manuals.

From an interview with Boom Gaspar and Josh Evans on Keyboard Mag. "The B-3 runs through two Leslie speakers, 'a model 45 that sits onstage for Boom to monitor, and a 145 that sits under the stage so that it is sonically isolated from the rest of the sounds,' says Evans. 'The 145 is miked up with two Sennheiser E609 mics on the top rotor and one Sennheiser 421 on the low rotor.'”
