LMMS: A 2024 Review On The (Best?) Free DAW - Hardware Busters

hwbusters.com

LMMS stands out as a solid free DAW choice, particularly appealing to beginners and electronic music enthusiasts familiar with FL Studio. Despite its ease of use and cross-platform capabilities, the lack of updates, occasional crashes, and limited VST support hinder its potential. While it can't rival paid alternatives for professional projects, it remains a viable tool for those starting their music production journey, with the caveat of navigating through its quirks and learning curve.

LMMS review: Best free DAW software for music production?

learnhowtoproducemusic.com

LMMS offers an impressive range of features for a free DAW, but its complex user interface and lack of recording capabilities make it a tough sell for both beginners and advanced producers. The software's multi-window layout is cumbersome, especially on smaller screens, and its limited VST support undercuts its potential. While it's available on multiple platforms, Mac users face additional hurdles, including startup crashes and confusing interface hints. Exporting options are decent, but the inability to import MP3 files and use external VSTs limits its versatility. Overall, LMMS's drawbacks outweigh its benefits, making it a challenging tool for serious music production.

Free, but not awful

My first few months of producing were all done on LMMS. LMMS has a great UI, and some really awesome features that others DAWS don't have, but it does lack some super important features. Overall, I'd say LMMS is a nice introductory program to production, but is not something that can be used to create a professional sounding track.
