    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's advised to match the amp's ohm setting to the cab's rating; mismatched ohms can strain tube amps more than solid-state amps.

    Source
  • Running a lower ohm amp into a higher ohm cabinet results in lower volume output; a multimeter check is recommended for used cabs.

    Source

Build quality

  • The 412ms cabinet is noted for its robust construction, despite variances in speaker models installed over different production years.

Great cab for bass

I've been using one of these for bass in the past 5-6 years, the only thing I did to it was rewiring it to 8 ohms to make it aeasier to use with other heads. It's robust as hell - heavy too of course - and sounds great.

Great sounding cab but reeeaaalllyyy heavy!

This cab was given to me by a lady I ran into in the music store. She overheard me saying “now I just need an amp” she asked me what kind of amp I was looking for and at that point in time I didn’t care how small or crappy it was I just wanted/needed an amp. She told me she had an amp she would give me that it belonged to her son but he wouldn’t be using it any time soon. In my mind I was picturing a little fender champ or a 110 peavey, something to that effect. She took me to her storage and opens the door and I see a Peavey Bandit 112 transtube AND this cabinet. I tried to pay this lady but she wouldn’t accept payment. I wasn’t expecting ANYTHING that big. Needless to say I’m eternally greatful for that lady. The first thing I noticed was how heavy it was, and I had to carry it up a narrow stair case to my room. That was a very trying experience to say the least. This cab is just about 100lbs (my best guesstimate) it’s massive. It’s not your typical 4x12. Turns out it’s a 1978 Peavey Oversize 4x12. The name Bertha was bestowed on this cab. I was very impressed with the sound, they’re really balanced speaker but more so what impressed me was how well built it is. Like most all older peavey amps and cabs…they’re tanks. The original speakers never were replaced and being a cab that was over 40 years old…that was impressive! It was wired in series, 8 ohm speakers. Never saw a 2 ohm cab until then. I thought it was a typo on the peavey label at first. So it’s rewired for series parallel. I use this cab with Peaveys, Marshall’s, my fender amps and it sounds absolutely amazing! The only thing I don’t like about it, is that’s loading and unloading this thing is a task. If you have a trailer it will work great! But loading this into an large SUV it’s like playing Tetris. if you’re loading into a car…good luck. Overall great cab, sounds great, versatile, built well, but very very heavy!

John Deacon used Peavey 4x12 Speaker Cabinets alongside Peavey 215 cabinets from late 1973 to early 1978. Although the current photo is incorrect, as it doesn't show the exact model John used, it confirms his use of a Peavey 412 cabinet during that period.
