Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Roland V-Drums.

Features and functionality

  • The TD-50 module offers 8 outputs, beneficial for live gig setups, allowing sound engineers to manage venue acoustics without altering the drummer's module settings.

    Source
  • The TD-02K lacks a real kick pedal, which can hinder learning proper kick technique, unlike kits with a dedicated kick tower.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The VAD 503 model lacks digital hi-hats compared to the newer VAD 504, which includes them, enhancing the overall playing experience.

    Source
  • Owners highlight that the TD-27KV2 includes digital hi-hats, unlike the TD-27KV, making it a preferred upgrade for those seeking realistic hi-hat responsiveness.

    Source
  • For a similar price, the Alesis Nitro Max includes a kick pad and pedal, offering more features than the TD-02K, making it a competitive alternative.

    Source

User experience

  • Users who've transitioned from TD-07 to TD-27KV2 note improved positional sensing, which may not be fully utilized by beginners but is appreciated by advancing drummers.

    Source
  • Kits that appear assembled haphazardly, with elements like the ride cymbal positioned unusually high, often indicate minimal previous use.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The VAD line is recommended for drummers needing acoustic aesthetics for gigs, as they utilize the same triggering technology as V-Drum pads but with acoustic shells.

    Source
  • The kit's lightweight and compact design is ideal for low-volume gigs or home practice, with users mentioning ease of transport and setup.

    Source

Build quality

  • Users note that the TD-02K's single-zone pads, except for the ride, feel less realistic compared to kits with dual-zone mesh snares.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend upgrading with a kick tower and bass pedal for improved performance, particularly for those transitioning to acoustic kits.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The TD-02K can be connected to MIDI plugins like Addictive Drums for enhanced sound quality, especially important given the basic on-board sounds.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The TD-1DMK's joints require a drum key for adjustment; ensure the outward curved bar is parallel to the ground and legs are vertical before retightening.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • A TD-1DMK kit typically sells for around $549 new, making a used kit with an included amp and mesh heads a good deal.

Great for MIDI recording

The internal sound banks are great, but I mostly use the V-Drums for recording MIDI beats when I want them to have a more human feel with less quantization. The pads are very sensitive with great velocity response. For some reason, some of the pads will quit working, but unplugging the drums and plugging them back in again seems to fix this problem every time.

In this recently published YouTube video, around the 2:00 time mark, Jason is completing several drum fills as the result of the beginning build to verse of this Van Halen classic, Right Now. During the fill, you can clearly see the V-Drums reference at the bottom of the pads and the Roland reference at the top. The Axiom monitor system box should not be confused with the D-50 sound module next to it. Note that this is the great portable option. Sounds great!

"Since I’ve been doing the e-drummer thing for thirty years, I’ve amassed a huge collection of beat boxes, samplers, Wave Drums, plus all the loops and samples, and even several over-priced boat anchors that each still manages to do one special thing that no other box will do. It’s amazing: As useful as the V-Drums, ddrums, BFDs, DFH, Battery, Stylus, and Drumagog all are, I will still at times use an old box like the SDSV or Synare–or even a real drum…that gets processed."
