TDK Sound Cube review: TDK Sound Cube - CNET

cnet.com

With its striking design and powerful sound, the TDK Sound Cube aims to be the life of the party. Its plethora of input options and impressive audio performance deliver a solid experience for gatherings. However, the absence of a remote, AM radio, and a dedicated dock for devices holds it back from being a perfect portable solution. Moreover, the exposed speakers raise concerns for outdoor use. While it's a fun and capable speaker, it’s best suited for casual settings rather than audiophile environments. A compelling choice for some, but not without its flaws.

Review: TDK Sound Cube | WIRED

wired.com

The TDK Sound Cube delivers powerful, room-filling sound with an innovative design that allows for 360-degree audio. Its dual active drivers and passive reflectors create impressive bass and clarity, making it a standout portable speaker. With useful features like USB charging and a robust battery life, it’s perfect for parties. However, the hefty requirement of 12 D batteries for portability is a drag, and its performance as an amplifier is a bit lacking compared to dedicated options. Additionally, the lack of a remote and cumbersome cable placement are noticeable downsides. Overall, it's a stylish and functional gadget that balances quality and convenience, but be prepared for some quirks.

A Pumpin' HiFi Audio System with a handy 1/4" Instrument Jack/Mix feature.

I've since docked two stars - It would deserve 5 stars for sound alone but construction defects and poor components handicap what would otherwise be one of my favourite bits of kit. I still use it daily. The flaws are basically

  1. The aerial was never functionally connected to the built in FM radio tuner - I use a bluetooth to FM radio re-transmitting device sitting on top of the speaker that essentially just blasts a radio signal directly to the receiver circuit, bypassing the aerial altogether!

  2. the control pots are so poor they need a squirt of contact cleaner every few months. The Vol has a very narrow margin between too quiet and too loud -

  3. Put 12 new D-Cell batteries in it and they'll be dead within a month - The speaker is never truly off!

This is basically a portable Hi Fi 'Cab' for audiophiles but the instrument jack gives it an unusual edge (dropped in later editions) As a guitar amplifier it delivers just a straight clean sound with no adjustment beyond simple volume control. However, adding my cheapo Behringer GDI21 (Sans Amp GT2 Clone) really brings this Sound Cube to life, modelling enough amp, gain, tone and mic configurations to meet my modest needs. Even my Bad Monkey's cab sim sounds presentable through this.

This is my goto 'lounge amp' since it also dutifully serves as speakers for my Laptop/TV/Chromecast/Phone/Spotify and whatever other audio demands I throw at it. Altogether a valuable and versatile addition to my gear.
