Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Teenage Engineering Oplab.

Features and functionality

  • The Oplab module offers CV and MIDI outputs, making it versatile for connecting modular synths and devices that don't respond well to USB hosts.

    Source
  • The Line module includes audio input/output and MIDI, facilitating sampling on the OP-Z through line-in, instead of using potentially noisy mic input.

    Source
  • The inability to use step components or punch effects on the module track limits its CV sequencer use, affecting its integration with modular setups.

Use cases and applications

  • Oplab is ideal for syncing Pocket Operators or connecting to synths that utilize CC and CV outputs, useful for those without other MIDI-compatible modules.

    Source
  • The Line module enables complex setups by connecting a MIDI controller, sequencing synths, and running an effects loop simultaneously.

    Source

Build quality

  • Some owners report issues with Oplab's pin connector, where strong springs and a weak latch cause connection problems, sometimes requiring DIY fixes like duct tape or paper clips.

    Source

Comparisons

  • An Arturia Keystep is suggested as a cheaper alternative for those primarily interested in CV sequencing, offering similar MIDI functionality without the build quality issues.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users can bypass some of Oplab's limitations by assigning OP-Z tracks to MIDI channels via the app, allowing step components usage.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners with a non-bowed OP-Z report a secure fit and flawless operation, suggesting physical condition of the OP-Z may affect Oplab's performance.

good!

I bought this with the Moog Sub Phatty 25-Key, it works really well, I don't have to adjust sound or have a pre-amp to have sound work well through instruments anymore, it is a very good thing for using more than 5 instruments together at once, I use it in the middle of my room connected to all of my friends instruments.

Great little box.

The Oplab musical experiment board allows you to interconnect virtually any electronic musical instruments and music software. No more hassle with one box for MIDI and another for CV or a third for USB. Just connect your cables, set the appropriate scenario and experience a perfect sync. Oplab has it all in one place.
