Joel Stroetzel's Gear
I still have a Soldano SLO-100 that I’ve had for many years. I love that.
In Premier Guitar interview done with members of Killswitch Engage, it has been mentioned that Stroetzel uses D'Addario EXL115 guitar strings.
We string the guitars with 011-.050 DR Tite-Fits, and I use Caparison picks that are like Dunlop Jazz IIIs, but a little heavier.

On Joel Stroetzel's website, it lists a Maxon OD808 among his gear.
This pedal was also mentioned in Killswitch Engage's Premier Guitar interview.
The Maxon OD808 has been one of the biggest parts of our sound, pedal-wise. We have it on at all times for dirty tones. It compresses the output of your guitar a little bit: It tames any flubby low-end and gives you a nice thick attack, so everything seems to cut better in the mix.
Among the gear listed on Joel Stroetzel's website is a Maxon AD-9 Delay Pro.
“I always wish I could play pedal steel guitar, but I’ve never had the patience for it. I have lap guitars, I have a B-Bender Telecaster, but pedal steel… I’m not sure it’s a road I want to try to go down!”
"I have been huge fan and player of Caparison guitars for over a decade now. Throughout the years I have tried many of their various models, and have loved them all! I am pleased to say that the JSM has all of my favorite features from all of the models I have tried, yet it still manages to be very unique within the Caparison family of instruments...
"...I truly could not say enough about this guitar! Perfection in every detail. Many, many thanks to my friends at Caparison for making my dream guitar come to life! I hope that anyone who has a chance to play a JSM loves it just as much as I do!" Joel says, in this article.

Adam Dutkiewicz & Joel Stroetzel from Killswitch Engage create music that spans from the cleanest of cleans, to aggressive melodic metal. In the studio, they’ve used a wide variety of active and passive equipped guitars. Live, this presents its own set of challenges. Now Adam & Joel have one set of pickups that does it all. The Killswitch Engage Signature Set packs tremendous versatility into one set of pickups. Voice 1 begins with our Modern recipe, but Joel & Adam prefer a tighter bass for more note definition and screaming midrange and harmonics. In the bridge, Voice 2 contains an extremely unique vintage/medium output hybrid passive tone, equally great for cleans, crunch, and searing leads, while the neck produces a crystal clean, fluid voice. In addition, there are unique single coil voices for each pickup, to nail the perfect modern active “hot” coil split, and vintage passive true single coil tones.

Yeah, there’s a lot of different stuff going on, and we used a lot of different guitar amps. Many of the rhythm parts were done with a Diezel VH4, and for a lot of the main overdubs we used a Splawn Nitro, which is basically a hotrodded Marshall with KT88 power tubes, which give it a bigger sound more like the JCM 800s.
Our favorite cabs are Mesa/Boogie Stiletto straight cabs with Celestion Vintage 30s. That’s what we tracked with, but sometimes if the tone wasn’t fitting in we’d send the recorded part out to another amp so we didn’t have to re-track it.

One in particular that we used for a lot of the clean parts was actually a G&L Legacy Special that has the noiseless single-coil pickups – they sound really cool. Plus it’s got different modes and a high-frequency push/pull and a five-way switch on it. It had a lot of cool clean tone options for doubling up chords and choruses and stuff like that just to make things shimmer a little bit, it’s always nice to get some single-coil sounds in there.

Before co-designing the KSE fluence set, Joel used the Fishman Fluence modern set. Joel was the fist of the two guitarists to try fishman pickups. He instantly fell in love, and then showed the pickups to adam, who also fell in love with them. Joel states that he used many diffrent active pickups over the years, but had a hard time finding one that was right for the guitars he played. They would often be muddy and unclear. Joel liked that the fishmans where clear, consise, and didnt drive the amp too hard like most active pickups. He also liked that they complimented whatever guitar he put them in. Voice 1 of the modern set is what they ended up basing Voice 1 of the KSE set on
