Description

The Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard R9 is a masterful tribute to one of the most iconic guitars in rock history. Crafted in the prestigious Gibson Custom Shop, this reissue captures the essence of the original '59 Les Paul, offering an authentic look, feel, and sound that will appeal to guitarists and collectors alike. Tom Murphy's aging techniques lend the guitar a vintage patina, with subtle dings and checking patterns that suggest decades of loving use. The marriage of a lightweight mahogany body with a 2-piece maple top delivers a significant tonal balance that is both warm and articulate.

At the heart of this guitar are the CustomBucker pickups, painstakingly engineered to replicate the legendary PAF tone that defined the sound of the late '50s. These Alnico III humbuckers are paired with a hand-wired harness featuring paper-in-oil capacitors and 500K CTS pots, ensuring a wide sonic palette that ranges from sweet and musical to bold and biting.

The mahogany neck, shaped in an authentic ’59 "C" profile, promises comfort and playability, further enhanced by the smooth, Indian rosewood fretboard and Plek'd frets. Vintage enthusiasts will appreciate the attention to detail, from the historically accurate Kluson tuners to the meticulously aged hardware.

This guitar is more than just an instrument; it's a piece of history, lovingly recreated for the discerning musician who craves the authentic Les Paul experience.

Eastman SB59/v

similar sound cheaper alternative

Eastman SB59/v's are not cheap. They are $2600 on Sweetwater but that's still a lot less than an R9 which will set you back between $4.5k to $6k. I owned an R9 years ago and I think the Eastman is just as good. I actually prefer the finish on the Eastman and the pickups (they come with Lollars for the newer ones, Duncans on the older ones, like mine). I must say, the plastics on the Gibson look more premium but that's nitpicking. The only caveat with the Eastman is the resale value. The Gibson actually grows equity for some reason.
