"Elliot, the owner of Dean Guitars and ddrum in Tampa, Florida wanted to hook me up and I was like 'Hey, that's cool! I need a new drum set and a company that actually wanted me to be using their product and made me feel good.' I was using 24'' kick drums for the longest time with my Tama kit. Went back down to 22'' kicks. Went to smaller toms. I started out using 10, 12, 14 way back when I started and I actually went to 12, 13, 14 for the longest time. Now I'm back to 10, 12, 14 on my toms. Kinda makes the kit a little more compact I guess. They're great drums. Sound great. I'm happy with them. Good company."

"I used nine V drum pads, five DrumTec pads and a Korg wave drum. The V pads went into a Roland TD10, and the Drum Tec pads went into my D Drum 3 brain. The signals from the V kick and V snare pads were ‘Y’ to access both brains from the same pad. An additional pad sat under the hi-hat area, to my left, and was ‘Y’ to the kick pad, allowing me to play the same kick sample with my hand."

Willie used ddrum modules on his "Trapparatus" drum kit in 1985. The Trapparatus was an updated version of the "Motorcycle" drum kit that he used during 1980, which consisted of Pearl Syncussions and a PAiA module.

From the February 1986 issue of Modern Drummer:

"I chose to use ddrums for the Trapparatus because theirs were the only samples I had heard that included the ambient room sounds I wanted. And at the time that I actually designed the kit, theirs were also the only drums that had the amount of sampling time that I felt was necessary — about 1.6 seconds. I'm not sure what their frequency response is, but their quality is comparable to that of the Emulator II or the Fairlight. Their pads also have a fairly good playing feel, although there are definite problems with them. The bass drum has a great feel. There is "give" to it, so when the beater strikes, you have the simulation of how a beater feels when it depresses the plastic surface of a drum-head, which you don't normally get when you attack a surface that's like a formica countertop. Of course, ddrums do have their limitations. For instance, there is no bank-switching to allow the changing of pre-set sounds. We had to build our own system for that."

The ddrums can be best identified in the photo above by the angular design of the kick drum pad, located at the bottom left.

The Trapparatus was destroyed in early 1986 when the warehouse it was stored in caught fire.
