Build quality

  • The neck has a substantial thickness of nearly 1" and a nut width of 1.75", resembling an old-school baseball bat feel.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners often choose EMG Geezer Butler pickups for a vintage '58 Precision sound, which are based on Bobby Vega's bass.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer MIM models due to similar neck and body wood as American models, alongside better pickups and bridges like the Hipshot.

    Source
  • The Player II has a nut width of 1.625”, which some users find more comfortable compared to the wider 1.75” nut width of the Vintera II.

    Source

User experience

  • The initial glossy and slightly tacky feel of the fingerboard on newer American series models reportedly wears off over time.

    Source
  • Rolled fretboard edges on the Player II enhance comfort, reducing fret sprout issues, which is not a feature of the Vintera II.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Player II’s modern neck profile and features are noted to be better suited for casual players focused on recording rather than live performance.

My perfect bass.

I play this instrument in almost all my gigs (when double bass isn't required), ranging from studio work for artists at Super Native Records, to wedding-band work, to my own rock(ish) band, Scenery. For those of us who can't afford (or are too young to own) a real vintage instrument, but need that old-school sound or feel, this really does the job.
