Matrix Magic (SOS Mar 86)

muzines.co.uk

The Sycologic M16 Digital MIDI Matrix is a game-changer for complex studio setups, transforming MIDI routing from a cumbersome task into a seamless operation. It offers a user-friendly interface with a 40x2 character LCD, allowing easy patch editing and recall. The ability to label instruments by name and control up to 48 destinations with expanders makes it highly versatile. Notably, it can send individual program changes to connected devices, a huge time-saver. However, it's not without its flaws; the 'sustaining note' issue persists despite an 'All Notes Off' command workaround. At £599, it's a pricey investment, but for large studios or live settings, its robust functionality justifies the cost.

Indispensable!

The Sycologic handles routing and program change commands for the entire keyboard rig. It can save up to 32 memories for instant recall on the remote controller. Each one will change the settings of the entire rig as you programmed it saving time going around changing sounds and such on each device. It handles up to 16 MIDI in and 16 MIDI out. The only flaws are that it could do with having more than 32 memory locations and the program change section only goes up to 99, but it was built in 1986... Nonetheless, I couldn't run my rig without it!
