Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Nord Stage 3 HP76.

Build quality

  • The hammer action on the HP76 model is less tiring for travel despite being heavier than semi-weighted, but may not suit technical pieces if you're used to lighter keys.

    Source
  • Some Nord Stage 3 units experience booting issues due to insufficient thermal contact in the MCU's Power Pad, potentially causing early failures.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The HP76 offers a substantial weight advantage over the 88 model, making it a better choice for musicians who frequently transport their keyboard.

    Source
  • Owners have compared the Nord Stage 3's acoustic piano sounds unfavorably to Yamaha Motif XS and Roland RD-2000, describing them as thin and boxy through headphones.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners of the HP76 report arm fatigue when playing complex pieces, indicating a potential trade-off between portability and playability for more technical music.

    Source
  • Some owners have repurposed their Nord Stage 3 primarily as a MIDI controller, indicating dissatisfaction with its standalone sound quality for piano simulation.

    Source
  • Owners report frustrations with Nord's limited internal storage, requiring frequent sound management for gigs, despite modern expectations for larger capacities.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The HP76 is favored by users needing a balance between portability and the feel of hammer action, suitable for gigging musicians prioritizing weight reduction over key preference.

    Source
  • The Nord Stage 3 excels in live band settings, particularly for Rhodes and B3 sounds, but is less suited for silent practice with headphones due to audio processing limitations.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The headphone amp on the Nord Stage 3 is considered weak, struggling to drive HD650 headphones at reference listening levels without distortion.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users suggest utilizing larger sample files from the Nord library to potentially improve piano sound quality, as default medium samples may lack depth.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Repairing a failing Nord Stage 3 mainboard involves replacing the Texas Instruments AM1705 MCU, with heat application necessary for proper desoldering and reflow.

    Source
  • Button contact bounce, causing multiple presses per click, can be fixed with deox-it spray, small capacitors, or replacing the buttons entirely.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Upgrading the Nord's storage is not feasible due to its flash-to-RAM data transfer system and would require both RAM and firmware modifications.

Critic Reviews

Nord Stage 3 review: An In-Depth Look at the Famous Red Beast

pianodreamers.com

While the Nord Stage 3 HP76 boasts impressive build quality, excellent sound engines, and a user-friendly interface, it's marred by its high price tag and limited flexibility in sound routing. Musicians may feel constrained by its inability to define custom split points and the restriction of effects to single sound sources. The key action, although playable, lacks the realism found in some competitors. For a premium investment, the absence of dedicated outputs and advanced features found in rival workstations may leave some players wanting more. If portability and intuitive playability are your priorities, this keyboard shines; otherwise, be prepared for a compromise in versatility.

negative

Clavia Nord Stage 3

soundonsound.com

The Nord Stage 3 HP76 is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, boasting enhanced sample memory, increased polyphony, and improved effects. Its dual-panel setup allows for impressive versatility, making it nearly two instruments in one. While the acoustic pianos and Hammond organ emulations shine, the Vox and Farfisa models feel outdated and require updates. The lack of user-assignable split points and the necessity of purchasing additional pedals for full functionality are notable drawbacks. Still, for those seeking a robust stage keyboard with a rich sound palette, the Nord Stage 3 delivers in spades, making it a worthy investment for serious musicians.

In the live Phillmore video (youtube 8aBoFuFF5HE), near the end, you see the name on the face as she's playing. In the live Vevo video (youtube rFTajrWUXaM), right at the beginning you see the key layout and switches layout. On this hp76 the controls are centered with red space above, on the shorter hp73 they are up near the edge, less red space. Pretty good deduction I think.

Now in the Vevo, I'm dying to know what is the woodgrain synth on top. That has to be 1980's. It has the Jan Hammer sound.
